What makes you think she's telling the truth? Sounds more like the girl has an idealised ultra-romantic slightly rediculous version of events, wheras yeah he's just trying to look big in front of the lads.
@Comrade_Liar, she's got no agenda to lie for and her version is simple, unlike his. You can't call it a ridiculous version of events as we don't know what the events are. The film's opening beach sequence has the same tone as her and she doesn't lie or exaggerate throughout the film.

Well, if you've seen the movie...she's telling the truth and he lied about it to look cool in front of his friends. Although partially he was lying to her over the summer to win her over.

@kmk_natasha, I don't think he's lying during the summer. Quite the opposite - away from his friends, he's being completely genuine. That's the problem he wrestles with throughout the film and finally resolves at the end-of-year funfair.

I think Comrade_Liar got it just about right. There are always three sides to any story: HIS side, HER side, and the TRUTH. Sure, he's stretching the truth quite a bit, but she's romanticizing/idealizing it some as well.
Big fan of this movie, big fan of the song, and it's the song that got my wife and I ento Karaoke. But that's more than you wanted to know, I'm sure ...
