Mushroom Cult (feat. Serj Tankian) Lyrics

Kaleidoscope of love
Ophidians dance as the shifting occurs
We are stars and electric animals
Nurtured by the mothers of prostitutes

Floating in a mushroom universe
Swimming in a sea of cyclostomes
And as we surface through the tide
You open up and I come inside

I must be in limbo
‘Cos Purgatory’s always felt like home

And as the world spins round and round
We fornicate upon the cotton clouds
That rain down sulfur smiles
On the children at play in the poppy fields

Sinking for what seems like forever
Like Atlantis into the sea
To forget the shore and wash away
Wash away my memory

I must be in limbo
‘Cos Purgatory’s always felt like home

Inside the moon lives the high priest of the mushroom cult
Upon the altar are the ashes of the Pharisees
I sold my soul, sold my soul, sold my soul away
I’m free of guilt, free of sin, free of everything!

Inside the moon lives the high priest of the mushroom cult
Upon the altar are the ashes of the Pharisees
I sold my soul, sold my soul, sold my soul away
I’m free of guilt, free of sin, free of everything!

i think they are makin funa religion and churches and shit. they are talkin about the altar and high priests and how he sold his soul away so hes free of guilt and sin. that means he gave into organized religion and htey say if u follow them you are free of sin and all that, so u sell ur soul to them. also he talks about pergatory being his home and a mushroom universe maybe cause this world is so screwy and its like bein on shroomz and also talkin about how u see htings like children playing in poppy fields and all happy but then all of us being reaised by mothers of prostitues saying things arent wat they seem. then la lalalala part is prolly them jus being on shroomz or mocking the "perfect" world we live in

Clearly, and agreeably, the song is about mushrooms and religion; however, the question is: how do these two ideas relate?

John Marco Allegro, in his book 'The End of the Road', proposes a theory interconnecting mushrooms and Christianity, declaring that modern Christianity arose from the mushroom cult. Id est, a cult that depended upon the inhaling of psychoactive mushrooms, thus bringing onto oneself a 'closeness' to God. Furthermore, he declares that Jesus was the manifestation of 'amanita muscaria' -- a type of mushroom.

'I must be in limbo / Cause purgatory's always felt just like home / Inside the moon lives the high priest of the mushroom cult / Upon the altar are the ashes of the Pharisees / I sold my soul, sold my soul, sold my soul away / I'm free of guilt free of sin free of everything'

Firstly, the chorus beings with two references to Roman Catholicism, telling of how the narrator must be in 'limbo', a place where those who are non-purified go to become fit for heaven, in place of baptism. Baptism, in itself, is a way of purifying -- a sort of way to relinquish oneself of past and future sins. Thus, Because the narrator has yet to be baptised, the line 'Purgatory's always felt just like home.' He then goes further to say 'Inside the moon lives the high priest of the mushroom cult', suggesting that the belief systems of the people in this cult, 'the pharisee' [a sect that appeared during the intertestamental period; it is interesting to note that this is when the members would have to been inhaling the psychotropic to be able to conjure the symbol that is Christ], which is also the foundations of the Christian religion, are desensitizing themselves on these mushrooms. Because of the mushroom cult, the narrator feels as if he is 'free of guilt; free of sin; free of everything.'

i read yo comment some, maybe 5, years ago and completely forgot about it. and than, the other day i read somethin about allegro and remebered it. thing is, is misunderstood yo comment. i thought yo said that jesus was a type of mushroom. and that belief existed in my subconciousnes for all this time. now i know, that i must use this for a book im writin. jolly good

another system colaboration, this one was with Serj and Dog Fashion Disco

anyway, the song seems to be aobut being on mushrooms, it fits with the title and the entire song seems to describe hallucinations (not quite sure how to spell that) anyway, something else to feed your brian

hey knave you misspelled brain, you put my name instead, thanks! you should feed your brian at least 3 times a day. :) i think this fucking song is about smurfs, think about the title, mushroom cult... the smurfs were a group of ummm things that lived in mushrooms. and that LA LALA LALA LA LA LALA LALALALALA part sounds like something they would sing. yeah but the rest of the song doesnt fit so it probably is about shrooms.

I think everyone who reads these lyrics should go out and buy the Dog Fashion Disco album "Anarchist of Good Taste" now I am not saying this cause I am on the street team... only cause I care to de-stress the growing fade of listening to the same old crap we all tend to pretend to like. Explore SOAD & DFD's roots in music as well, such bands as Mr.Bungle and Oingo Boingo. This was a shameless plug to all the music I like! Thank you for furtue attacks to my manhood!
