So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Within the pale white walls
From 9 to 5, day after day I feel no more alive
Than the stiff that lies the table before me
Wake up too early to twist the key
Stumble on over to the Mr. Coffee
Pour myself a warm black existence
We’re 9 to 5
Within the pale white walls
From 9 to 5 day after day I feel so cold inside
Like the stiff that lies the table before me
Wake up too early to twist the key
Stumble on over to the Mr. Coffee
Pour myself a warm black existence
9 to 5 at the morgue
Overtime for the corpse
Hypnotized by the hum of the freezer
Hypnotized by the look in your eyes
Hypnotized by the pallid cadaver
Hypnotized by the look in your eyes
9 to 5!
The truth
Is harsher than you think
It’s the hair that fills the sink
Or the wrinkles around your eyes
Until you’re old and hypnotized
9 to 5
9 to 5
Die and die
Die, draw flies
Die and die
Die, draw flies
This day is never going to end for me
The end
Is closer than you think
So pour yourself another drink
And don’t let it get to you
‘Cos that’s exactly what it will do
9 to 5
9 to 5
Die and die
Die, draw flies
Die and die
Die, draw flies
Wake up too early to twist the key
Stumble on over to the Mr. Coffee
Pour myself a warm black existence
9 to 5 at the morgue
Overtime for the corpse
Hypnotized by the hum of the freezer
Hypnotized by the look in your eyes
Hypnotized by the pallid cadaver
Hypnotized by the look in your eyes
Stitch his lips
Shut his eyes
9 to 5 at the morgue
9! To! 5! At! The! Morgue!
From 9 to 5, day after day I feel no more alive
Than the stiff that lies the table before me
Wake up too early to twist the key
Stumble on over to the Mr. Coffee
Pour myself a warm black existence

i think this song's about screwing a corpse.
