Breakfast After 10 Lyrics

White kitchen walls with a thousand windows
you turn on Winston in the den
and I'm still asleep but I can hear the piano
when you make breakfast after 10
and I smell the coffee on your fingers
I still smell the perfume in the bed
the crushed linen roses on everything
and your still inside my head

you gotta make her know how it feels to miss you
let her know your swapping sides
you're not the one with all the problems no no
you're the one with all the pride

so just pick your head up boys and walk away
walk the coolest walk that you know
cause in a month or two she'll call you
you gotta hang up the phone

I hope she knows I got this memory
that won't ever seem to break or bend
a thick lock and sheetrock is on my windows in the kitchen
I dont think I'll ever take them down again

and I've learned a lot from all these break ups and make ups
and fuck ups and fake ups
things that I wish you could comprehend, yeah comprehend
but for now I'll lace up my wingtip shoes, boys
and I'll go and have breakfast with my good friends

you gotta make her know how it feels to miss you
let her know your swapping sides
you're not the one with all the problems
you're not the one with all the problems
you're the one with all the pride

you gotta make her know how it feels to miss you
let her know your swapping spit
you're not the one with all the problems
you're not the one with all the problems
she's the one that's full of shit

so just pick your head up boy and walk away
walk the coolest walk that you know
I know you know that in a month or two she'll call you
you gotta hang up the phone

i absolutely love this song. Favorite out of ANY blue october song. I think everybody can relate to it, too. Somtimes you just need to walk away from a one-sided crazy relationship. Its like an anthem of what you want to do or should do.. just dont know how to.

A lot of us could learn from the lyrics "you're not the one with all the problems you're the one with all the pride"

Sometimes you just have to stand up and walk away with your pride still intact, no matter how much it hurts.

Huge fan of Blue October; have been since they were just a new local band.

But am I the only one here who thinks the song is dripping with sarcasm? C'mon; Justin sounds like he's in major denial here. "You're not the one with all the problems; you're the one with all the pride," does not sound like he's complimenting himself. He obviously feels very deeply for her, and yeah, is bitter, but it sounds more to me like what goes through the male side of a break-up -- the sort of head-games he plays with himself in an effort to make it seem justified, or him feel less guilty, or that he's done the right thing, etc.

Rationalisation. Sounds like gobs of it to me. (And extremely well conveyed.)

Musically, I love the especially blues-y feel here, and the way that his vocals are just so damned passionate. Wow. And the abrupt ending with the dial tone? Very Floydian. Absolutely love it.

Mindhuntress -- the end of this song always reminds me of Floyd's "Nobody Home," the way it stops way short of resolve.

I think 'thick lock and sheetrock' is him closing out the rest of his world because he's so fixated on this one issue. He's locking the door and covering the windows.

I absolutely love this song.

This may sound crazy, but I relate to this song in the death of my mom. My childhood was the "white kitchen walls with a thousand winds" and while I'm not angry at her for dying there's still so much anger that it happened and I'm just all locked up and screwed up from it.

"a thick lock and sheetrock is on my windows in the kitchen I dont think I'll ever take them down again"

And while you act like you're all tough and you'll SHOW THEM you really just hurt so bad inside and would take it back in a heartbeat. I think that's how Justin feels too.

Its amazing how love, the most beautiful of all things, can turn one so bitter.

I think you got it right mindhuntress.

But I think the part where he says:

"I've learned a lot from all these break ups and make ups and fuck ups and fake ups - things that I wish you could comprehend, yeah comprehend..."

...is pretty telling in that this isn't the first break up/make up they've been through together. Like it's a relationship with a lot of games going on. And that instead of just being depressed and wanting her back as usual, he's going to keep living life without her this time. This time is going to be different (or at least he's telling himself that) - and when she calls to get back together again... he's not going to be there waiting for her call.

Whether he's still playing the game (by trying to teach her a lesson) or he's really done with her... is hard to say. But I agree with you that it's dripping with sarcasm.

What does "Turn on Winston in the den" mean. Winston Churchill? Winston who?

@SoldierSide77 Hey Soldier, I was wondering if anyone would ever ask this question. Like Blue October, I am from Houston. Houston is huge but generations of my family went to the same H.S. that Justin and the boys attended. We call it The Heights primarily in the zip code of 77009. HOWEVER, super close (5 minutes or so), there is another neighborhood called Denver Harbor, also known as 5th Ward. I think he's making a reference to the street named Winston in zip 77009 which again, is close enough to Denver Harbor for him to use them together. "Turn on...

I think he means George Winston, the pianist. "I'm still asleep but I can hear the piano."
