Muskrat Love Lyrics
Muskrat, muskrat candlelight
Doin' the town and doin' it right
In the evenin'
It's pretty pleasin'
Muskrat Susie, Muskrat Sam
Do the jitterbug out in muskrat land
And they shimmy
And Sammy's so skinny
And they whirled and they twirled and they tangoed
Singin' and jingin' the jango
Floatin' like the heavens above
It looks like muskrat love
Nibbling on bacon, chewin' on cheese
Sammy says to Susie "Honey, would you please be my missus?"
And she say yes
With her kisses
And now he's ticklin' her fancy
Rubbin' her toes
Muzzle to muzzle, now anything goes
As they wriggle, and Sue starts to giggle
And they whirled and they twirled and they tangoed
Singin' and jingin' the jango
Floatin' like the heavens above
It looks like muskrat love
La da da da da ...
Doin' the town and doin' it right
In the evenin'
It's pretty pleasin'
Do the jitterbug out in muskrat land
And they shimmy
And Sammy's so skinny
Singin' and jingin' the jango
Floatin' like the heavens above
It looks like muskrat love
Sammy says to Susie "Honey, would you please be my missus?"
And she say yes
With her kisses
Rubbin' her toes
Muzzle to muzzle, now anything goes
As they wriggle, and Sue starts to giggle
Singin' and jingin' the jango
Floatin' like the heavens above
It looks like muskrat love

"Muskrat Love" is a soft rock song written by Willis Alan Ramsey depicting a romantic liaison between two anthropomorphic muskrats named Susie and Sam. The song was first recorded by Ramsey himself on his sole album release Willis Alan Ramsey (1972) on which the song was entitled "Muskrat Candlelight" referencing the song's opening lyric. A 1973 cover version by America - re-entitled "Muskrat Love" for the lyrics which close the song's chorus - was a minor hit: a 1976 remake by Captain & Tennille afforded the song its highest profile, peaking at number four on the Billboard Hot 100
I grew up in the 80's and didn't hear this song much, yet now when I hear it I get misty-eyed for a generation that I didn't even live in! I wish I lived in a time when this sort of thing is considered Pop. The overall sound and harmonizing seem to represent to me what the music of the early seventees were like. The time when there was more optimism and a hippie feel that soon disappeared from mainstream. I love this silly song about rodents screwing.
Captain and Teneille, not America
America recorded "Muskrat Love" for their 1973 album Hat Trick, marking the second time the band had recorded a song not written by a member of America.

Long live Sam and Susie,it is one of the best happy go lucky songs in pop history, but also is saying every living creature can have a love story.that's something to ponder.
i've heard this song since i was a kid...why would anyone want to write a song about muskrats?
Some one on serious drugs...
what the fuck? I mean, I love this song...but muskrats? "nibblin' on bacon, chewin' on cheese" someone is on drugs...haha
Back in the 70's, Musk was a main ingredient in men's cologne. When people talked about what attarcted people to one another it was a lot of times the "musk" that they gave off. Maybe the song has something to do with this.
