Sweet Religion Lyrics

When my body wants to go
Tell me, will my mind and soul
Live on and on forever?
Am I on another level?
A learning vessel of several lessons
To make me more cleverer?

My sweet little religion
My sweet little religion, you mean everything to me
My sweet little religion
My sweet little religion, how does it feel?

Written in that book of love
Does it say your name above
The name by which they call me?
And is it written in liquid red?
'Cause nothing else will do instead for
Reassuring eternity

Will you be there when I need you?
Will you be there when I need you?
Will you be there when I need you?
Will you be there when I need you?

Begin, end
Enemy, friend
Heaven, hell
Sick, well
Truth, lies
Husbands, wives
Whisper, shout
In, out, in, out
Laughter, cry
Ask, reply
Good, bad
Happy, sad
Right, wrong
Outcast, belong
Caged, free
You and me
(You have the answer to all of these...)

Will you be there when I need you?
Will you be there when I need you?
Will you be there when I need you?
Will you be there when I need you?

My sweet little religion, yeah
My sweet little religion, you mean everything to me
My sweet little religion
My sweet little religion, how does it feel?

My sweet little religion, yeah
My sweet little religion, you mean everything to me
My sweet little religion,
My sweet little religion how does it feel?

Hey guys, she explained a lot of these at a small concert recently, so I've been going in to each one and letting everyone know what she said. Here goes, this one is about a relationship she was in with a very religious guy and how to her, he was like a religion. She was extemely "intoxicated by him." :)

thanks, that actually makes sense to me. Given that, it seems like she's also asking if she gets to be part of him or will his religious nature exclude her in the end...

THis is a pretty deep song. This song is about her onlook on Religion, even deeper her outlook on God.

"will you be there when i need you?"

Here she's asking God if he will be there when she needs him. At first i thought she was poking fun at religion , sprituality etc everything to do with it. But this line changed my mind " You have the answer to all of these" She says this after comparing good and bad things in life together , and after saying that "religion " has the answer to these. God actually. She questions God basiclly in this song. I probably already hinted that or said it but, oh well .

"When my body wants to go Tell me will my mind and soul Live on and on forever Am i on another level"

These lines are some of her questions.

XoXo

she told the story at the london itunes festival 07 and its about she was going out with a guy that was a full on christian and had jesus tattood on his arm and he was selevant wich was fun trying to make him not selevant he was a lot older than immi was she thought he was really good and she wrote this song about him and looking up to him. she said it wasnt actually about religion and asking these questions cos she thought he new the answers and he didnt

Oh man, I love this song. I especially love the "begin, end, enemy, friend..." part, I really don't know why. This is just great.

Personally i dont think this song is about religion, but it's related.

I think its about Love and Life. Some people treat love as their faith and live their life by love. I think she's trying to find some insight into life.

But the main reason i think this is about love is

Begin end enemy friend heaven hell sick well Truth lies husbands and wives, whisper shout in out in out Laughter cry ask reply - good bad happy sad Right wrong outcast belong, caged free you and me

It just reminds me of relationships, Not just lust love, but platonic love aswell.

I think that on some level the song is pretty basic: she's singing about fearing all the things we all fear (death, pain, meaningless) and is seeking God/Religion for answers. The song is pretty vague on how Imogen Heap actually feels on these matters, which is certainly interesting. The final verse seems to be realizing that God is in everything, and thus is inescapable, even in seeming opposites.

"Written in that book of love Does it say your name above The name by which they call me? And is it written in liquid red? 'Cause nothing else will do instead For reassuring eternity,"

Some of my favorite lines of hers, ever. A song about fate, wondering if it exists, and if so...is her love her true love? are they meant to be, will it last forever...? and in a way, he becomes her religion, because she wants to believe in him -- in the "we" they could become. takes a little faith, I think, so it's a great analogy...
Edited by delial on May 28 2008, at 07:10AM

I kind of get the idea that this song is talking about being part of a religion to have eternal life getting acceptance from a group and some good things that come with it. But not subscribing to the "difficult" aspects of being religious like not sinning or being a good person ALL the time. And also having the thought that you are special because you are saved.

A sweet religion when maybe actual religion is not so easy.

At first I thought she was making fun of religion. But then I realized she was actually just singing about the questions many of us ask God ourselves. My favorite part is the end with the opposites. Love ya Immy!
