... A Psychopath Lyrics

A baseball bat
A baseball bat beside my bed
I'll wait around and wait around
And wait

I hear a noise, I hear a noise
Well, I hear something
I am alone, you win again
I'm paralyzed

I drift away, I'll drift away
Am I asleep yet?

I hear a scream, I see me scream
Is it from memory?
Am I awake, am I alone
When it is sunrise?

A baseball bat, a thing of mace
That thing of mace, the thing of mace
Where did I leave it?

A psychopath, a psychopath
He says he loves me

And I'm alone, and I am cold and paralyzed
I can't move

Woman: A man is trying to break through my door. I don't know who he is.
Dispatcher: He's doing what?
Woman: He's trying to break open my door!
Dispatcher: What is your address? [...] What's your name, ma'am?
Woman: Karen.
Dispatcher: Karen, jam behind your door.
Woman: I'm at the front door. Okay. Oh no.
Unknown Man: Just let me in.
Dispatcher: Karen, are you still there?
Woman: Uh-huh. He broke through the door!
Unknown Man: Let me in.
Dispatcher: Karen, are you still there?
Woman: Uh-huh!
Dispatcher: Shut the broken door. Lock it, jam it, then come right back to the phone.
Woman: He's at the door! He's here! He's here! Oh no.
Dispatcher: Are you still with me, Karen? Tell him you've got the police on the phone.
Woman: I've got the police on the phone. Who are you? Why are you here?
Unknown Man: (Indistinct reply)
Woman: I've got the police on the phone. I've got the police on the phone. Why are you here, why are you here? Why, why?!
Dispatcher: Karen? Karen?

Cover art for ... A Psychopath lyrics by Lisa Germano

I've read that Lisa wrote this about an actual stalker who harassed her for years.

While I would agree with you, sin, that it's about always waiting to be attacked, I'd disagree that the narrator feels "ready" in the sense of being adequately prepared and up for the task of defending herself. To me, the song chronicles the slow but complete disempowerment and paralysis that is caused by living in constant fear.

i don't think it necessarily has to be a woman repeatedly raped. just once and she could be destroyed, always afraid. i know it's one of my biggest fears, and i have my own mace under my pillow. it's just a woman forced to be afraid of what she views as a constant threat, always ready and waiting for that sick, crazy fuck.

i don't quite know what to make of this song... i guess it most makes sense to me by thinking it's about a girl who is raped regularly--possibly by a boyfriend?--& feels she can't do anything about it except let the guy do it. i could be dead wrong though... regardless, the song is incredibly haunting & wonderful.

@bittenlip The woman on the phone was real and the guy was a thug stalking her. She was later raped and murdered
