The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove Lyrics

The Ubiquitous Mr Lovegrove

I thought that you knew it all
Well you've seen it ten times before.
I thought that you had it down
With both your feet on the ground.
I love slow...slow but deep.
Feigned affections wash over me.
Dream on my dear
And renounce temporal obligations.
Dream on my dear
It's a sleep from which you may not awaken.

You build me up then you knock me down.
You play the fool while I play the clown.
We keep time to the beat of an old slave drum.
You raise my hopes then you raise the odds
You tell me that I dream too much
Now I'm serving time in disillusionment.

I don't believe you anymore...I don't believe you.

I thought that I knew it all
I'd seen all the signs before.
I thought that you were the one
In darkness my heart was won.

You build me up then you knock me down.
You play the fool while I play the clown.
We keep time to the beat of an old slave drum.
You raise my hopes then you raise the odds
You tell me that I dream too much
Now I'm serving time in a domestic graveyard.

I don't believe you anymore...I don't believe you.

Never let it be said I was untrue
I never found a home inside of you.
Never let it be said I was untrue
I gave you all my time.

I could be totally wrong, but the more I listen to this song, the more I understand that Brendan is putting his foot down and saying good-bye to an abusive, unfulfilling relationship -- his ex-paramour is a deceitful liar whom he has apparantly forgiven over and over again, but no more! "I don't believe you anymore..." And towards the end, in so many words, he's letting the bytch know that she lost a good thing...good-bye!

definitely about a relationship that wasn't fruitfull from the begining "in darkness my heart was won" kind of reminds me of my failed marriage, my ex wife always accused me of being unfaithful but in reality I gave her all my time and sacrificed a lot for her untill the bitter end.

The title of this song comes from an episode of the old British show "Danger Man", starring Patrick MacGoohan. I have no idea why they used that title for the song though.

The titled is suited quite well. Peter MacGoohan character "Drake" in Danger Man is a perfect example of who he is and how is lives/looks at life; how he is portrayed.

This and Spirit sound very very similar soundwise and lyrically. Maybe they're connected?

Two fantastic tracks and both about failed relationships.

Did anybody catch this song in The Crossing Guard (scene in the strip joint)?

It could be about drugs; especially the lines:

"I love slow ... slow but deep. Feigned affections wash over me. Dream on my dear And renounce temporal obligations. Dream on my dear It's a sleep from which you may not awaken."

and: You build me up then you knock me down. We keep time to the beat of an old slave drum. Now I'm serving time in disillusionment I thought that you were the one In darkness my heart was won.

"Now I'm serving time in a domestic graveyard."

It could also be that the death of domestic life was caused by the addiction.

Countless lovers have danced and make love to this song. It is one of the most sensual songs mankind has ever created. However, if you listen to the true meaning behind the melody, it is a sad one. One lover giving all of his time, love and soul, but in the end he was still left empty from the other lover so the love affair was ended.

I've been reading these meanings for years now and I'm finally compelled to tell you what it really means.

This is song from a married man who was having a swinger relationship, then unexpectedly fell in love.

"I thought that you knew it all Well you've seen it ten times before. I thought that you had it down With both your feet on the ground. I love slow ... slow but deep. Feigned affections wash over me."

So he/they were just in it for the sex. It had happened many times. Just sex and fun. Hence the "feigned affection" no real love. He takes time to fall in love.

He does fall in love and they plan to leave their spouses for each other.

"Dream on my dear And renounce temporal (time) obligations."

(From Death do us Part)

"Dream on my dear It's a sleep from which you may not awaken."

Wake up this isn't happening. We can move on.

"You build me up then you knock me down. You play the fool while I play the clown. We keep time to the beat of an old slave drum. You raise my hopes then you raise the odds You tell me that I dream too much Now I'm serving time in disillusionment"

She then keeps telling him. Soon, I'll leave my husband soon, I just need the right time to do it. It doesn't happen, but then she says "soon" again and again. Then he is confused, but hopeful, but so torn.

"I don't believe you anymore ... I don't believe you."

Again she keeps saying "soon" I will leave my husband. Yet he wants to wait. The love is deep now.

"I thought that I knew it all I'd seen all the signs before. I thought that you were the one In darkness my heart was won."

He thought their love would win. She said she would leave her husband many times. In the darkness of love making he fell in love. It was just swinger sex, but unexpectedly he fell in love with her and loves deep now.

"You build me up then you knock me down. You play the fool while I play the clown. We keep time to the beat of an old slave drum. You raise my hopes then you raise the odds You tell me that I dream too much Now I'm serving time in a domestic graveyard."

She keeps saying she will leave her husband for him. She keeps temping him with the love he wants, but yet she hints it will never work. He has since broken it the love off with his wife because he is certain this women is "the one" yet he lives the life of a tortured husband waiting for her to complete his life.

"I don't believe you anymore ... I don't believe you.

Never let it be said I was untrue I never found a home inside of you. Never let it be said I was untrue I gave you all my time."

He finally realizes she is never going to be with him. She will never leave her husband. He has pulled the pin on his marriage, but he loved this women and did all he could to love her and gave his life for her. He did everything he could, but still can't get the love he wants.

@Alphateam It's the end of a relationship > "domestic graveyard" - they're living together. "Feigned affections wash over me" - is the fact he's burnt out from her running him down all the time.

Nine years since last comment; no one may ever see this one...

I think this is darker than a breakup. It is about a loveless ("feigned affections"), abusive ("slave drum") relationship that was based on lies and/or sex ("in darkness my heart was won")...

But "Dream on my dear And renounce temporal obligations. Dream on my dear It's a sleep from which you may not awaken." sounds more like attempted murder.

@HarpHack wow. I get songs stuck in my head subconsciously, then look at the lyrics and translation.

This is scarily a depiction of my position in life presently. Combine this with falling asleep to this every night for a year 25 years ago makes sense.
