Sweet Leaf Lyrics
Alright now!
Won't you listen?
When I first met you didn't realize
I can't forget you or your surprise
You introduced me to my mind
And left me wanting you and your kind
I love you. Oh you know it
My life was empty forever on a down
Until you took me showed me around
My life is free now, my life is clear
I love you sweet leaf - though you can't hear
Come on now - try it out
Straight people don't know what you're about
They put you down and shut you out
You gave to me a new belief
And soon the world will love you sweet leaf
Won't you listen?
I can't forget you or your surprise
You introduced me to my mind
And left me wanting you and your kind
Until you took me showed me around
My life is free now, my life is clear
I love you sweet leaf - though you can't hear
They put you down and shut you out
You gave to me a new belief
And soon the world will love you sweet leaf

Yeah, pretty obviously about cannabis. Still, it's written well enough that you could almost just interpret it as a love song to a person, with "sweet leaf" just being a cute name. Regardless, it's definitely about cannabis.
"This is from a band that existed in the 70's and 80's, so Marijuana songs would be unheard of. Jimi Hendrix is the only exception."
Man I pray to god that was a sarcastic comment.
I can't believe there is an arguement over what this song is about. Know-it-alls would like to believe that everything they read is true, totally disregarding the fact that maybe things were written in the booklet to mislead certain people intentionally? This is a love song for cannabis. Straight up. That and the one time I saw Black Sabbath live where ozzy didn't bail out there was a gigathemntic clock that came up on the screen behind that read "4:19" and right before they started 'sweet leaf', when it started it flipped to "4:20". That and fog machines. The messed up part is that this sounds like one of the deepest love songs in metal. It's so sweet lol.
Yes, this song is about Marijuana- in fact, you hear Tony Iommi coughing at the beginning of it. He said this is his only (and best) vocal part in any song.
that cough is obvious enough. cigarette coughs don't echo.
@endofsorrow92 omfg! that is a great point hahahaha

If anyone thinks this is not about marijuana needs to watch The Last Supper concert/doco. Ward and Ozzy make it perfectly clear that the song is indeed about mary jane.
The coughing intro of the song is actually Tony Iommi!
I'm pretty sure this song is about marijuana. Nobody can like cigarettes THAT much.
This song is about His love for Pot
you know what's funny? not only is this song about marijuana, it's TO marijuana. He actually says "I love you" to pot. That's pretty god damned funny.
