I love this song... idk what to say about it- its self explanatory- being scared of your own thoughts- ur own mind not being a comfortable refuge...
my favorite joseph arthur song, by far. i have the live version - don't know if there's a studio version out there somewhere? - and it's just so enticing. i have to listen to the whole thing once i hear those first opening guitar chords. =]
that said, supercilious is right - the meaning isn't difficult to discern. it's about a guy who's having trouble keeping cool inside his own head, who is constantly plagued by his own imagination. i can relate.
the lines "Everyone i recognize Looks at me like i'm a ghost" make me wonder if his problems have perhaps changed him, and his friends and family, even mere acquaintences, no longer know who he is anymore.
"Walking down these dying streets I thought i heard you call my name But it was only in my mind You were never there at all" maybe he lost someone he cared about, and continues to hear his/her voice in his head because he misses them?
