Amy's Song Lyrics

Amy's gone
And time rolls on
How far? how fast? how long?

The last time we saw Amy
She was headed for the shore
Fighting off the volatile gray skies

She said now begins forever
And that no one knows there time
We bid farewell not knowing
That might be our last good-bye

Amy was a fighter
She cut like Casius Clay
She burned like a fire
Despite these rains

Where time was a question
She only knew one song:
She's singing, "how far, how fast, how long?"

Salvation is a fire
In the midnight of the soul
It lights up like a can of Gasoline

Yeah, she's a freedom fighter
She's a stand up kind of girl
She's out to start a fire
In a bar code plastic world

When everything stops moving
And i stop to catch my breath
And ride my train of thought
All the way around

My thoughts return to Amy
And the fire she's begun
She came when we were freezing
And left us burning up

Actually Amy is an embodyment of the different heroes that the group has (actually the band has admitted this in interviews, so I'm not just going out on a limb, and even if I were there is enough justification in the text to support this). The zealousy for christ is only a part of the whole. John Donne once said in relation to the interconnection of man that if "...one clod is washed away Europe is the less" this also holds true for poetry or lyrics. There are more factes of "Amy's Song" than would generally meet the eye. For example. Amy is dead. (if you don't belive me read the first stanza). Symbolically standing for what Blake would call "experiance" (as opposed to innocence) where the earlier optimism that a person has had has been tainted by the world. The death of Amy becomes more important though, also because of the memory she left with the speaker, and the speaker's burning passion to emulate the ideal set by Amy/ his heroes.

"last time we saw amy she was headed for the shore" amy went over the edge, she went so far to save the world that she left it

It is an inspiration to spread the gospel now and not wait another second because we are not promised any more time than what we have right now.

This is a beautiful song, I've been inspired to live a better life by it. It was the first song I really listened to the lyrics on, and since then Switchfoot has become my favorite band. The song really does have many many facets, and since I don't want to write a book (which I'm sure I'll get close too) I'll comment on the first one I noticed.

"Salvation is a fire In the midnight of the soul It lights up like a can of Gasoline

Yeah, she's a freedom fighter She's a stand up kind of girl She's out to start a fire In a bar code plastic world"

The first line being our brokeness, "midnight of the soul", when God truly can come and show us all He has for us, and then our responce to what's been given: a joy that cannot be hiden, "goes up like a can of gasoline" (mirriored in Isaiah 6). At midnight, people for miles are able to see a huge fire, and so should be our light when we find Truth and Redemption from God in Christ.

And then on too the rest of our lives. Being different, standing for what we know to be True--whether or not anybody else does. Being "real" in a "plastic" (fake) world. Out to make a difference, and accomplish the impossible. It's the way I've seen it, perhaps not the way it was written to be, but it helps my daily walk to remember and sing it.

I just found this song & i'm in love!!!

I actually want to be a missionary, and just a fire in general, so this song is really encouraging!

How far, how fast, how long have you called me to serve you, Father? That kinda seems like the theme of this song

I LOVE IT!!

I feel in love with this song the first time i even read the lyrics. my name is Amy, so this was total inspirtation to go and live life the way the song portrayed "amy" living her life. power to Jesus

This song tells a story about a zealous disciple for Christ, who sets out on a mission with her eyes fixed on the prize. She leaves not concerned about her return, but her arrival, she changes the world in a radical way, but never takes credit for it. She will keep on fighting, all of her days.

This song is definetly a lot more personal to me. I have a friend named Amy at school so that really changes things for me you see, Amys slogan in life is "how fast how far how long" and its really ironic and cracks me up and every time she says that i sing this song to her 5 times in a row. Its just crazy this song was written for Amy at my school.
