Lay Down Sally Lyrics

There is nothing that is wrong
in wanting you to stay here with me;
I know you've got somewhere to go
But won't you make yourself at home and stay with me?
And don't you ever leave.

CHORUS:
Lay down Sally, and rest you in my arms,
don't you think you want someone to talk to?
Lay down Sally, no need to leave so soon,
I've been tryin' all night long just to talk to you.

The sun ain't nearly on the rise,
and we still got the moon and stars above;
Underneath the velvet skies love is all that matters,
won't you stay with me? And don't you ever leave.

CHORUS...

I long to see the morning light,
coloring your face so dreamily;
So don't you go and say "goodbye",
but you can lay your worries down and stay with me,
And don't you ever leave.

CHORUS...

I think it's an awfully boring song.

Boring? Sorry it doesn't have enough screaming or bass for you. This is Clapton: respect one of the many fathers of rock and roll.

Just plain good, a true classic.

Are you kidding? These lyrics aren't about kidnapping, and they wouldn't make sense that way. They are about the singer telling Sally how much he loves her, and he doesn't want her to leave (to go to work, say). When he says he doesn't want her to leave, he means both right now, stay with him and forever, be with him. The tone is all wrong for a kidnapping song.

My Interpretation

I disagree; the lyrics would make sense if the singer were a kidnapper.

However, I've always thought that this song was about a guy who was in love with a prostitute. That was the only conceivable reason I could think of that she would be leaving in the middle of the night (moon and stars above). I've seen many interviews where prostitutes claim that a lot of men just want to talk, which seems to be what the singer wants.

A kidnapper?

This song is a classic :)

The thing is even though its addressed to someone called Sally , i think its written for Pattie Boyd. Yes yes another song for her . However according to her interviews , when Eric Clapton serenaded her with Layla she was apparently so overwhelmed she finally gave into his advances . That very evening they met at a party and George Harrison found them together outside talking over things . So this song could probably be from Eric to Pattie that very evening . He says it so himself , how she should stay with him even though she has somewhere else to be .

I maybe wrong but contextually it makes sense .

I totally agree with your theory! I just read his autobiography and wow....Most of his classic songs are indeed written about Pattie.
