Buddy Lyrics
She's comin over
we'll go out walking
make a call on the way
she's in the phone booth now
I'm looking in
there comes a smile on her face
there's still some the same stuff we got yesterday
there's still some the same stuff we got yesterday
I'm too much with myself
I wanna be someone else
I'm too much with myself
I wanna be someone else
so we take off out Fiona's door
walk untill it's light outside
like before when you were on the phone
we have to laugh to look at each other
we have to laugh cause we're not alone
as the cars fly up King Street
it's enough to startle us
it's enough to startle us
I love my drug buddy
my drug my drug buddy
I love my rug buddy
my drug my drug buddy
we'll go out walking
make a call on the way
she's in the phone booth now
I'm looking in
there comes a smile on her face
there's still some the same stuff we got yesterday
there's still some the same stuff we got yesterday
I'm too much with myself
I wanna be someone else
I'm too much with myself
I wanna be someone else
so we take off out Fiona's door
walk untill it's light outside
like before when you were on the phone
we have to laugh to look at each other
we have to laugh cause we're not alone
as the cars fly up King Street
it's enough to startle us
it's enough to startle us
I love my drug buddy
my drug my drug buddy
I love my rug buddy
my drug my drug buddy

makes me cry. It's actually called 'drug buddy'
It was originally called "Drug Buddy" on the first release of Shame About Ray. When they did the next pressing of the album (when Mrs Robinson was added to the end) the name got changed to "Buddy" because radio stations wouldn't play it because it had "drug" in the title.
It's about scoring drugs on King Street in Newtown (suburb of Sydney).
I very much doubt that they are singing about King St. in Newtown/Enmore. I mean, King St. has got to be a pretty common street name and the band is from Boston in the U.S., not Sydney.

I have no evidence that they aren't singing about King St in Newtown, I just think that it's not very likely.

You are dead right about the name change though. It's listed as "Drug Buddy" on my copy of Shame About Ray.

I just remembered that the Lemonheads often collaborate with the Sydney based band "Smudge" (great band BTW. It's well worth tracking their stuff down if you haven't heard of them) so perhaps it's not as unlikely as I first thought.

@iliketoeaticecream This is more a comment to the comment by @tvsinesperanto. Unlikely as it seems, I am positive I read an interview with Evan where he said he was specifically referencing Sydney. I remember because up to that point I had no idea that one of the band (Nic Dalton) was an Australian or that Evan had been spending so much time in Sydney.

As I recall the title was changed to Buddy because Wal-Mart refused to carry it with the original title.

haha i love this song it just is basically saying that he loves his drug buddy... i actually think that they are friends but i also think they like each other. i dont know if she was smiling when he was looking in the phone booth because she knows he has the shit but because she is jsut happy to see him.. maybe both. but this is a sweet song.. reminds me of me and my drug buddy
I think it's about the bond between two stoners, enjoying the intimacy of being in their own little world together, where even mundane details seem beautiful.

the kind of relationship, where you do share a little world together, is ultimately how this intimacy is born.

Such a brilliant song, it actually makes me wish I did drugs
Who doesn't love escaping and a good time? I love my drug buddy.
Check out the acoustic radio version Evan and Juliana did.
partially, i like to think of it as being more about the kind of relationship you share with anyone wherein you might engage in what might be considered somewhat self-destructive behavior.
i've also always loved this part: "we have to laugh to look at each other. we have to laugh cause we're not alone." -- i like they they actually have to laugh. i'm pretty sure i've been in this situation before. not sure i should be admitting that.
also, love this: "i'm too much with myself, i wanna be someone else. i'm too much with myself, i wanna be someone else." -- it makes sense in many ways with actual regards to the song... various form of escapism, to escape yourself for a little while. i like it more in a general way though, doesn't need to be in context. it's very applicable to my life.
lastly, i just love an evan and juliana duet. they both have such distinct, beautiful voices.
