I was in High School when this band was releasing what has become their greatest hits. "One" was, as for many, a favorite of mine!
The meaning of this song, for me, is plain to see. The fact of loneliness can be experienced by ones self...as a couple...or even in a crowd!
The most extraordinary part of the song is the following lines: "No is the saddest experience you'll ever know---------Yes, it's the saddest experience you'll ever know" It seems to be speaking about hearing the word "No" and the feelings one has after hearing the word. I can sympathize with a feeling of anxiety or sorrow when the word "No"is used as a response to some inquiry of mine.

I think its about being alone hence one being the loneliest number. Two sometimes isn't much better because you can be with someone and still feel alone. No can be considered the saddest experience because getting a no when you ask someone out is upsetting and finally, when that girl is gone, all you can do is dwell on the past.
It means that the single digits are very lonely numbers, especially cause zero doesn't really exist...

I think theres not many comments because this is one of those songs everybody has heard but barely anyone knows who actually sang it. This happens a lot with Three Dog Night songs.

this is one of my favorite songs by three dog night...i love the line that says two can be as sad as one...cuz its true...ive been very lonely while it was just me...then at one point of my life i got someone and at times even though i had someone i was still just as lonely...great song...
I know, I tend to listen to this song when I am depressed and or lonely, its all too true.

It's too bad that this song is used mostly in comedy movies. It totally kills the effect of what was probably supposed to be a genuine song.
