Fly Lyrics

Please give me a second grace
Please give me a second face
I've fallen far down
The first time around
Oh, I just sit on the ground in your way

Now if it's time for recompense for what's done
Come, come sit down on the fence in the sun
And the clouds will roll by
And we'll never deny
It's really too hard for to fly

Please tell me your second name
Please play me your second game
I've fallen so far
For the people you are
I just need your star for a day

So come, come ride in my my street-car by the bay
For now I must know how fine you are in your way
And the sea she will sigh
But you won't need to cry
For it's really too hard for to fly

Beautiful song about missed opportunities, longing for second chances. I see this as an optimistic song from Nick, as he seems to be yearning for an opportunity to get to know someone he knows little about, a relationship that ended before they really began to understand the intracacies of one another. The optimism stems from the vividness of the dreams Nick envsions; in this dream the sun is out and the clouds roll by as he learns to embrace the opportunities that the unknown provide.

honestly i think this song has nothing to do with politics. he may not have had "relations" in a sexual way with any woman or man, but he sure did have relationships, as in friends, and family.

from what i have learned about nick drake; his shyness, him being withdrawn from society (which is why this couldn't be about politics- because he wasnt apart of any of it) i think this is kind of a plea to those of which he was close to. im sure he was aware of his problem with withdrawing from people, im sure that was part of his depression. like i said, i think this is a plea to someone, anyone- a sort of "don't let me go, im still here, flawed and all". but also... sadly he thinks he has no second chance. he dosnt think he could do it anyhow.

i think alot of his songs are like that, optimistic, but also with an inkling of despair helplessness.

"I've fallen so far for the people you are" is one of my favorite lyrics of all time. Everybody has more than one face, and how rare is it to find someone who knows all of your "faces" and accepts them all. He's asking for the same from the object of the song, but is willing to accept that it's a rare thing and difficult to do.

This is my favorite Nick Drake song.

Probably my favourite of his songs, the contrast of the longing verses - "Please give me a second grace, Please give me a second face" to the ones where he accepts that it's over - "But she won't need to cry, For it's really too hard for to fly" is perfectly echoed by the high, pleading vocals in the first verse being shadowed by the low, almost spoken vocals in the second.

I believe that the third line in the last stanza is actually, "And the sea she will sigh." It makes a little more sense (to me anyway) and also is written that way on several other lyric sites. As always, I could be wrong.

A relationship failed for reasons niether is sure of, leaving the singer in her way...he wants a second chance, but seems convinced that it's too late, that it's "to hard for to fly."

This song fits the descending music so beautifully it makes me want to weep when I sing along with it.

Almost unbearably melancholic and the optimism such as it is is desparate and resingnedat the same time.

i love this...it's really hard to hear what he sings though, this is the first time i've read the lyrics...beautiful

Loving others before loving oneself- accepting the fantacy of stagnation as opposed to the reality of consistent change
