Over Lyrics
I can't hold this day
Anymore
Understand me
Anymore
To tread this fantasy, openly
What have I done
Ooh this uncertainty, is taking me over
I can't mould this stage
Anymore
Recognise me
Anymore
To tread this fantasy, openly
What have I done
Ooh this uncertainty, is taking me over
is taking me over
To tread this fantasy, openly
What have I done
Ooh this uncertainty, is taking me over
is taking me over
is taking me over
Anymore
Understand me
Anymore
What have I done
Anymore
Recognise me
Anymore
What have I done
is taking me over
What have I done
is taking me over
is taking me over

I've been there. Too many times....Incredibly intense song. Great video!! Simple and yet such an accurate visual of the emotions expressed. Gives me chills.
Lyrics are incorrect though: I can't hold this state, Anymore, Understand me, Anymore.
To tread this fantasy, openly, What have I done. Oh, this uncertainty, Is taking me over.
I can't mould this stage, Anymore, Recognize me, Anymore.
To tread this fantasy, openly, What have I done.
Oh, this uncertainty, Is taking me over, Is taking me over.
To tread this fantasy, openly, What have I done.
Oh, this uncertainty Is taking me over, Is taking me over, Is taking me over.
Oh It's all over, yeah, Oh It's all over, yeah, oh oh oh.
A lot of good photos of the beautiful Beth Gibbons here for all who are interested: http://kotinetti.suomi.net/heikki.hietala/bethphotos.htm
"To tread this fantasy, openly, What have I done. Oh, this uncertainty, Is taking me over."
She fufilled her fantasy of being with a guy who is all wrong for her, and/or she cheated with this boy who is leaving her with all of these uncertainties (not knowing if he loves her back) allowing her to feel as if her whole trek of persuing this boy (or cheating) is not worth while. And obviously, when she is undergoing this massive destruction of her heart, she is not herself, she is not happy, her state of being is almost unbearable.

In essence this song could be about so many different things. It could be about cheating with a lover, it could be about trying something new, or you could even twist the meaning to be about murder... it's very open ended in that way. For me personally I think it's about cheating.
I love how music (especially portishead's music) makes us all relate to a time in our own lives. For me this makes me think about how I found myself extremely attracted to an ex of mine who got married. It's a scary place to find yourself justifying your own happiness and what you would do to get it even at the sake of another's misery.
i really like this song it took me a while to get into but it just really hits me sometimes. human emotion is a crazy thing
you know there is a tele-vision show in iceland called sönn íslenks sakamál (true icelandic fellonys) and this song s the played in the opening scene.
mighty, mighty song! i think that beth speaks out not only for herself but but for all of us who have "sour times" of our own. when she does that you get the poetry at its best!
After watching this video, I think this song is about Beth Gibbon's musical career. I seem to remember reading that she came from rather modest upbringings and so becoming a successful musician (her "fantasy") and it's "uncertainty" is causing problems for her.
The speaker had a fantasy (could be cheating, could be murder, could be anything, its very open and I don't think that portishead wants to define anything in this sense), tried once, and is still VERY insecure weather to keep doing it or not, because it is a big change for her, for her personality... The song is about the indecision, not the fantasy in itself.
The Videoclip is amazing, Beth is in a spotlight, crosses a path of darkness and reaches light again... like she is lost crossing this dark places but going to the light again...
She could have serious problems and need help to solve it but can't find the right person to talk to. She can't find the light but it's not the biggest problem 'cause she knows darkness very well. She cheats and lies to cover her true self, nobody would believe her if she reveal herself. She knows, feels too much that is the problem.
Daydreaming....
