Little Bones Lyrics

It gets so sticky down here
Better butter your cue-finger up
It's the start of another new year
Better call the newspaper up
2.50 for a hi-ball,
And buck and a half for a beer
Happy hour, happy hour
Happy hour is here

The long days of Shockley are gone
So is football Kennedy style
Famous last words taken all wrong
Wind up on the very same pile
2.50 for a decade
And a buck and a half for a year
Happy hour, happy hour
Happy hour is here

I can cry, beg and whine
T'every Rebel I find
Just to give me a line
I could use to describe

They'd say, "Baby eat this chicken slow
it's full of all them little bones"

So regal and decadent here
Coffin cheaters dance on their graves
Music, all it's delicate fear
Is the only thing that don't change
2.50 for and eyeball
And a buck and a half for an ear
Happy hour, happy hour
Happy hour is here

Nothing's dead down here, just a little tired

They'd say, "Baby eat this chicken slow
It's full of all them little bones"

"Beauty can't save the world. Beauty can't save the world. But a kitty could. a Fuckin cat could save the world" - Gordon Downie Whatever that means.... I couldn't quite figure it out when i heard him say this live right before he started signing this, while baker was playing the opening riff to little bones

I think it is an ode to the downfall of our culture. Turn on any news channel at any random moment and anyone will want to remember the old days. Awesome song; it is one the first I had ever heard by The Hip.

Well I can't remember the source exactly but...

I've been told Gordie was sitting in a bar in New Orleans writing down what people were saying around him. Later on he fashioned it into a song.

Sounds plausible and reasonable.

Whether its true or not I don't rightfully know but I like to believe this.

I sort of think it's about worrying about all those things -- famous last words taken all wrong, the loss of the Kennedy's, or getting caught up in the rush of a new year, but then remembering to forget all that, and have a drink, and not forgetting to take care of the here and now, like not choking on chicken bones.

I don't know, but i think this song is about how the world today is always focused on the negative, and people have to watch what they say, or they will end up choking on their words.

I heard somewhere that he wrote the song shortly after he almost died from choking on a chicken bone.

This song is about New Orleans - a favourite hang out & recording location for the hip.

"Baby eat this chicken slow it's full of all them little bones"

This is probably one of the best one-liner's i've ever heard, you can apply this to n e thing in life and it'll make sense.

I've got to admit, I have no idea what this song means, but I do remember a couple of things from a radio interview years ago (at least 15).

  1. Little Bones was the name of a cat in the book ' The Last of the Craxy People' by a famous Canadian author named Timothy Findlay.
  2. His most popular book was titled ' Famous Last Words' (see verse 2,line 3 of the song) Gordon Downie always seems to sprinkle tidbits of Canadiana in his lyrics. Maybe this means something to somebody and could expand upon this for me

I definitely think its about living for the here and now and enjoying the simple things in life (maybe this is why he says a cat could save the world - the love from a cat could make the loneliest person feel loved). I'm not sure but I'd love to read those books wetcoaster mentioned so I could possibly gain a little more insight. I think maybe this song is also about how human it is to think there's something more to look forward to and make the mistake of taking whats infront of you for granted. Chew slowly and enjoy the chicken for what it is. :)
