Uncle Salty Lyrics

Uncle Salty told me stories of a lonely
Baby with a lonely kind of life to lead
Her mammy was lusted daddy he was busted
They left her to be trusted 'til the orphan bleeds
But when she cried at night no one came
And when she cried at night went insane

Uncle Salty told me when she was just a baby
That she'd get by and maybe someday she'd see
But soon she found her mother's love for all the others
The pushers and the shovers was the life to lead
But when she cried at night no one came
And when she cried at night went insane

Ooh it's a sunny day outside my window
Ooh it's a sunny day outside my window
Ooooh oh yeah
Ooooh oh yeah

Now she's doin any for money and a penny
A sailor with a penny or two or three
Her's is the cunning for men who come a runnin'
They all come for fun and it seems to me
That when she cried at night no one came
And when she cried at night went insane

Ooh, it's a sunny day outside my window
Ooh, it's a sunny day outside my window
Ooh, it's a sunny day outside my window
Ooh, it's a sunny day outside my window
Ooh, it's a sunny day outside my window
Ooh, it's a sunny day outside my window
Ooh, it's a sunny day outside my window
Ooh, it's a sunny day outside my window
Ooh, it's a sunny day outside my window
Ooh, it's a sunny day outside my window
Ooh, it's a sunny day outside my window
Ooh, it's a sunny day outside my window
Ooh, it's a sunny day outside my window
Ooh, it's a sunny day outside my window
Ooh, it's a sunny day outside my window
Ooh, it's a sunny day outside my window

ok, it's a girl she was left unattended she was traumatized when she cried at night alone, went insane??? Nope, the demons entered and she more properly sung: "Went in Satan" went in sayan, whatever she lost her mind! so to speak her's is the cunning, as she grew up for men... she now preyed on men (for money, etc??) a sociopath or other traumatized person

the sunny day is a reference to the darkness she views the days from Uncle Salty is now her father, so2speak

it can mean if you don't raise your children Uncle Salty will...

@10west awesome take on a pretty straightforward song

Brilliant song. Sounds like everybody else has it figured out.

i pretty much agree with everyone else, except i think the "sunny day outside my window" is from the girl's perspective when she was a child.

she was home alone, with her mother out bar-hopping, and the only thing that cheered her up was looking outside from her window --- but she was afraid to go out, because there was no one to watch after her.

one of the first songs about child abuse written, they never got respect for it.

@SageLFN I totally agree, needs more recognition

Trusted till the orphan bleeds? I don't get that...

Her mom was a prostitute, her dad a criminal, probably a drug dealer; she left and he went to jail. Uncle Salty is her brother, I think, and raises her. He thinks she won't take after her mom but then... "Soon she found her mother's love for all the others"

Cunning = c*nt? U know its probably right.

"It's a sunny day outside my window"- maybe Uncle Salty is taking a break from his dark story to acknowledge a beautiful day. Or maybe he's trying to say she had a son. Maybe one of the members of Areosmith's mom was a hooker!

@Shep420 Uncle was her tutor until she started menstruating (until she bleeds) and that's when more or less girls come of age

@Shep420 “Until she Bleeds “ is Hyman talk

The song is about a prostitute that was orphaned by her parents who were a prostitute and pimp. She lived virtually alone and neglected until she hit puberty "left to be trusted (neglected) til the orphan (her) bleeds (starting puberty). Uncle Salty may have been related to her or maybe he was a "john" that may have fell in love or had a relationship with her. "when she cried at night no one came. When she cried at night went insane" The neglect and ultimate hardship of living with a prostitute mother who was abused/assaulted by her "johns" while feeling abandoned drove her crazy. She becomes a prostitute at a young age because "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree" so to speak all the while dealing with mental illness. "ooh it's a stormy day outside my window" can have allot of meanings. She may have become a paranoid recluse or ended up in an insane asylum or even prison on may have committed suicide.

Tragic tale . Every time I listen to the song it makes my heart hurt.

...and when she cried at night, no one came...abandoned by a junkie hooker mother with no father on the scene, she was molested by foster parents untill she ran away..[when the orphan bleeds] in her young teens. I believe the reference to a sunny day outside her window is the hope of becoming free from the loveless life, or even the "end" that she believes suicide can bring her

"Left her to be trusted till the orphan bleeds" likely means that Salty (her brother most likely) was entrusted with raising her until she was old enough to look after herself. Think of a girl reaching menarche as now being a woman, and therefore old enough to do what she wants. "Cunning" definitely would be a play on "cunny," meaning that sex is the only thing that brings men to her, and by connection the only way she is able to feel wanted or loved. I think it's very likely that the song is supposed to be sung from the perspective of the girl's child, who is asking his Uncle Salty (his mother's brother) what happened to his mother. The "sunny day outside my window" refers to the fact that even though there's a beautiful world out there, he feels trapped behind glass, unable to properly enjoy life, only able to watch others enjoy it.
