I saw Joan Jett and The Blackhearts perform this live in Nashville at Warped Tour a couple of weeks ago. I didn't know she did a cover of this song until then. I was so happy!! She did a great job!

I agree w/zzoeE I can't stop playing this. Didn't know it was a cover, but whatever, I love it ;) I'm pretty sure it's about a girl she (I guess 'he' if the original is by a guy) just met and is captivated by. Not sure about what the crimson and clover, but it makes me think of crimson red lipstick and clove cigarettes.

I had thought it was about BDSM -- clover clamps, and crimson marks on his/her skin. But that was assuming it was original to Joan Jett, and knowing how many of her songs have kinky undertones -- if it's a cover, I guess that's less likely.

I saw her in concert, like 11 days ago, and I either read this or she said it, I'm pretty sure she said this: She would sing songs from a Tommy Jones album just for fun and they really liked her singing Crimson and Clover so they ended up recording it, plus, I believe, a few others. But obviously Crimson and Clover fo sho.
