Serenade

In my humble opinion, this song has a rather deep message. "Did you hear the music Serenade from the stars"

• On a clear night, he's laying under the starry night sky and feeling the music of the heavens cascading over him. the music, of course, can't be heard, but it's impossible to miss when you listen close enough.

"Wake up, wake up Wake up and look around you We're lost in space And the time is our own"

-A message urging others to wake up, see the beauty as it is. do what YOU want to do, not what they try and say you're supposed to. The time is OUR OWN.

"Did you feel the wind As it blew all around you Did you feel the love That was in the air" -he notices the timeless and eternal nature of the wind, and the peaceful sense of love that envelops him as the wind is all around.

"The sun comes up And it shines all around you You're lost in space And the earth is your own"

we're lost in space, the sun is just another star, the vast magnitude of space is just mindblowing. The earth is our own...hmm, I don't think that means that we own the earth. I think it means the earth is a part of us, we come from the earth, we will go back to the earth, and we live by the earth's graciousness. harm that's done to the earth will ultimately come back to us. My favorite SMB song. I believe it's about spending an evening with a girl. Seems that he's talking about everything stopping for them, nothing else matters, all that. I dunno tho...

I think this song is about a person who was in a clique with some other people and he left for awhile to do his own thing. When he came back to the clique he wasn't the same, actually I think it means he acted like he was better than the group. The group then tries their best to let him know they are still friends but the person that is being serenaded isn't getting it. proof "the sun comes up, and it shines all around you, YOU'RE LOST IN SPACE, and the earth is your own." they know he is IN but he isn't acting it around them. It's a love song to planet earth. I think the last line is supposed to read, " and the earth is our home..."

And can't help but thinking that parts of the lyrics are about some sort of drug experience.

Seems as typical lyrics revolving around hallucinogenic experiences. Lost in space (well yeah) and the time is our own (loss of time orientation during hallucinogenic trips). I am not aware of Mr. Miller's habit of drug use during this time, but it seems to me that this entire album (at least the first five songs) is quite spacey and it wouldn't surprise me if some LSD or similar was part of his life.

In my humble opinion, from a completely non-religious standpoint, imagine being an eyewitness to when God created the Heaven on Earth. Here is the testimony from a guy who was there to witness it from a human perspective and was amazed at what he saw.

"Did you see the lights As they fell all around you? Did you hear the music ? A serenade from the stars"

Pretty self-explanatory. "Let there be light..." is referenced here by our witness, who is amazed at the light that he saw for the first time. The music is the sounds that accompany the creation of light from the heavens upon the Earth; what those sounds are could be simply what he is associating with the earthly things that our witness is seeing for the first time. This is indicative by the next part:

"Did you feel the wind As it blew all around you? Did you feel the love That was in the air?"

The sound of the wind; the feeling as it blew around our witness. That happy feeling that he is getting from that first-time experience is the love and the joy rushing through him as he feels the wind around him.

"The sun comes up And it shines all around you You're lost in space and the earth is your home"

This is the fourth day in the Book of Genesis, when the sun rises and becomes the fourth day of Earth. The repeating chorus:

"Wake up, wake up Wake up and look around you We're lost in space and the time is our own"

…is a human reaction to an epiphany. That he has suddenly become aware of his surroundings. To wake up to the fact that we are traveling through space at an enormous rate of speed and that Mankind's time has arrived; that we are now in our rightful place in God's universe, to do with our time as we wish. The last chorus which should read "and the Earth is our home" refers to the Earth that God has created for us.

Whether Steve Miller intended this song to mirror an event in the Bible or not is not important. What is important is how the lyrics are easily able to reflect a biblical event, regardless of your belief system.

Some great comments here. I've always looked at this tune from the point of view based on the "overview effect', a cognitive shift in awareness reported by many astronauts during spaceflight, often when viewing the Earth from space. The "serenade from the stars" is the magical music that is all around us in this wonderful universe, a song often lost in the day to day challenge that is life on our planet. We are repeatedly urged to "wake up and look around you", if only to appreciate that unconditional love for one fleeting moment. We are truly lost in space, often losing sight of the fact that this fabulous world is our one and only home and we should appreciate it as best we can.

We are lost in space and we really don't know why we are here. But It is a beautiful inspiring world, the sun is shining and you only have a limited time to be a part of it. It is your time... so enjoy.
