As troereeb has already said, this song is about his love for Britt Ekland, who, when she heard the song, dropped her palimony suit against Rod. I don’t remember if they actually got back together. Was it an intentionally manipulative move by Rodney Rooster? Hmmm.... who cares, it’s a great song, miles ahead of his other ballad of around the same time, Tonight’s The Night, which I consider a tremendous piece of shit (“Spread Your WINGS and let me cum inside”?!? REALLY?!? I’m not even sure if he wrote it, but even if he didn’t, points off for poor song selection!!).

A beautiful love song indeed, definitely worthy of wedding material. I always dismissed him as too obsessed with women, until I learned of this song's various verses. The order was such:

Up to the first chorus : an ode to his first love Next verse : His adoration for his homeland, Scotland, its beauty, grace, and eternal strength.

Next verse : His STRONG love for his ties to soccer (i.e. "football"). He was an adept player and even the video for this song shows how these lyrics intend to pay tribute. Well written and respectful in all venues.

I'm definitely going to listen to this as a love song about couples / lovers and not as a tribute to his sports team. I respect that he loves Celtic United, but what a troll - to have such an absolutely perfect love song that seems like it's about a woman and then drop the bomb that it's a about football! ARGH

@lookin_for_answers Rod Stewart wrote the lyrics as a tribute to his then-former girlfriend, Britt Eklund. Though as stated above love of country and soccer were intertwined.

Oh, and the comments about soccer teams are only there to compare Ms. Ekland to them, since Rod’s love of socc- -sorry Brits - FOOTBALL - was well known (he WAS a HUGE star, after all, and he used to kick soccer balls into the audience at his shows. In fact he only stop because he got sued more than once. Some twats got brained, got a bloody nose or black eye, and decided to cash in. People really do suck ass!
