Awsome song, I just had to comment because no one else has... yes, off-tracks are good also!
i think the rusty water is beer or alchohol of some kind. in the first verse he talks about how the beer helps him as a singer(i dont know how), but in the second he talks about how its starting to ruin him. im just guessing, not really sure
the way it helps him is probably by helping him drain away the sorrows.
A "Rusty Water" is whiskey and tonic. It inspires him to write but gets him into trouble because of his big mouth.
