Climbing
Building us up
Tearing me down
Lifted back up we are climbing
All of this time
Drifting right back to the ground
Suddenly, suddenly, suddenly, suddenly
Questioning, and saying
Our opinions, they're failing
They're constantly changing
Our ignorance, remaining
We're hoping, and waiting
We're living, but dying
While trying to find out
My meaning isn't planned out
Come to the conclusion
Might as well be an illusion
While trying to find out
I did nothing, but struck out
Building us up
Tearing me down
Lifted back up we are climbing
All of this time
Drifting right back to the ground
Our opinions, they're failing
They're constantly changing
Our ignorance, remaining
We're hoping, and waiting
We're living, but dying
While trying to find out
My meaning isn't planned out
Come to the conclusion
Might as well be an illusion
While trying to find out
I did nothing, but struck out

I think this song is about getting to the end of their journey in Leitmotif and they keep trying to accomplish their gold (on whatever that gold is). Yet after a while the start to lose faith and they get frustrated.
All in all, this is one of my favorite Dredg songs. It's so beautiful. I love it.
@Riel2000 I'm a bit over 20 years late to this reply but I think you're right. I know the chances of you seeing this are slim but hope you're doing alright and still listening to Dredg.

I think it's just about the ups and downs of life and how they wear on us. And we keep trying to find proof of why we're hear, but searching for it constantly shuts you out of the real world.
I cant believe only one other person has commented. This is such an awsome song. Its about always being angry and never carrying and finding yourself meaningless and in trying yo ifnd yourself you realized you shut everyone out
Definitely agree with Riel. I think it's about struggling with something. Constantly wanting to quit, losing faith, and then getting it back again, only to find, you didn't.
"is based on the apachian word "yata-hey" which means 'today is a good day to die', quite pessimistic, huh"
German friend who did a review on the album "Leitmotif".
This can be true, cause of the story mode of the CD, that will be the "grand finale" (counting the last instrumental song as an outro) of the guy's story.
You can really tell that this song is full of anger and frustration.... Just by the tone of voice in the singing and the music's interation with the singing. Amazing how dredg can capture emotion so well. this song kind of makes me think that he is talking about the entire human race..... A person point of view that we all live pointless lives.....
And yea, the word "Leitmotif" is German and was created when Wagner created his musical stories or dramas... so its pretty cool to find a band that actually knows somethin about classical music too because lets face it... clasical music is amazing
richard wagner... haven't heard that name in a while. hitler was a big fan. [considers] i think tolkien was too.
wagner would have been a big fan of hitler, too ;). which doesn't change the impact his music has. but by the way, "leitmotif" wasn't created by wagner, he just made extensive use of them. it translates to "lead motive", which is found quite often throughout all music styles. so, it only shows that the band knows terminology ;). great album though.
Eastoneaston is right. The last part of the song is almost as climatic and powerful as the end of the Tool song Lateralus. It just fills you with thought and emotion.
I totally agree with all of you, although i am not so knowledgeable as to know about the german stuff.
Great song. Great band. Surprised not as many people know of them.
Zac.
