Putting The Damage On Lyrics
Glue,
Stuck to my shoe.
Does anyone know why,
you play with an orange rind?
You say you pack my things
and divided what was mine.
You're off to the mountain top.
I say her skinny legs could use some sun.
But, now I'm wishing,
for my best impression
of my best Angie Dickinson.
But, now I've got to worry
cause, boy you still look pretty
when you're putting the damage on
when you're putting the damage on.
Don't make me scratch on your door.
I never left you
for a Banjo.
I only just turned around for a poodle
and a corvette.
and my impression
Of my best Angie Dickinson.
But, now, I've got to worry
cause, boy, you still look pretty
when you're putting the damage on.
I'm trying not to move,
it's just your ghost
passing through.
I said
I'm trying not to move
it's just your ghost passing through,
it's just your ghost passing through,
And now I'm quite sure...
There's a light in your platoon.
I've never seen a light move
like yours.
Can do to me,
so now I'm wishing
for my best impression
of my best Angie Dickinson,
but, now, I've got to worry
Cause, boy you still look pretty
to me,
but, I've got a place to go.
I've got a ticket to your late show.
And now I'm worrying cause even still
you sure are pretty
when your putting the damage,
yes,
when you're putting the damage,
you're just so pretty.
When your putting the damage on...
Stuck to my shoe.
Does anyone know why,
you play with an orange rind?
You say you pack my things
and divided what was mine.
I say her skinny legs could use some sun.

I see 'Boys For Pele' as a concept album of self realisation, and so this song being at the end is really relevant to me. It's what makes it different from 'Hey Jupiter'. By this stage in her inner journey she is able to see the man she had been having problems with for who he really is, and she is able to study her feelings towards him more objectively. In Jupiter, she is in incredible amounts of pain, still wants to talk to the guy, to get him back, even. The wounds are very fresh. Here there is still the feeling that the man exercises a certain amount of power over her and that she still has a lot of trouble letting him go ("it's just your ghost passing through") but she is wiser. She knows she's "got to worry" about the way he is ("you still look pretty") but she knows the deal. That's why when the album finishes with 'Twinkle' - the light at her core - it's so sweet and triumphant. She's acknoledged her demon and let him go.
He's leaving her for another woman "You're off to the mountain top, I say her skinny legs could use some sun." He's breaking her heart, and he still looks pretty and she still loves him as he's doing it.
Damage speaks for itself. The song, being herself damaged, it's trying to teach myself about graciousness, and I have such a hard time with that. I have a very hard time. Damage was so essential for me to sing, it's one of the most difficult ones for me. I can look and have love and feelings for some of these people but... " [B Side, 05/96]
This song makes me cry, It evokes some feelings in me that are rarely shown.
It's about a soldier who she liked. Somwhere along the line they got seperated. The soldier is righteous, fearless, valient, and can put the damage on. She admires these traits in him, even when he is putting the damage on.
I love the lines: "there's a light in your platoon... I've never seen a light move, like yours can do to me"
It's so meloncholy, yet comforting.
Love the french horns in this song.
@PopeyeDoyle i think, "there's a light in your platoon" means "there's a light in your other you", stating she can wait for his nicer "him" to appear. in some cases platoon means a "substitute player". so not realy a soldier, though definitely someone very manly. ...one of the best song in known universe.

It always reminded me of a guy I knew who used to play at being broken and he kinda held his damage up high with pride. Like it was an excuse for who he was and he knew it was a way to make women care as they always wanted to fix him. I always knew I wouldnt care for anyone else the same way but that will always be the problem.
Fairycake, you may have just written this song yourself.
even though im a guy and the album is supposed to be from a womans perspective i can still connect to most of the songs on Boys For Pele. Like i really can relate it to bad relationships ive been in... I think thats a testament to how good of a songwriter tori really is, and how good she is at capturing emotions in her songs.
The bit about the poodle and the corvette is from Groucho Marx, who wanted to get his daughter out of his way one day and sent her off to shop. She came back and told him she bought a poodle and a corvette, and he never asked her to go like that again. in this song it makes me think of him telling her to leave him alone, he needs space, and she says yeah, well look what you drove me to (something pointless that annoys him)
