Half Life Lyrics
half life wastes before it goes
it's funny how your bee sting touch never leaves me whole
it's not enough to stay here almost trying
you keep your last laugh watch this dying
it's just your half time vertigo
and if you want an answer I don't know
if you had completed me
don't think I'd be pleased with you
don't think I'd compete with you
with half of me to take
half life nothing I'd call home
it's lucky how these phantom limb bee stings never show
it's not enough to leave this falling kindly
you burn my star down twice as brightly
it's just your half light undertow
but if you need forgiveness I don't know
if you had completed me
don't think I'd be pleased with you
don't think I'd compete with you
with half of me to take
half light breaks with nothing wrong
just a corner of my bed where you don't belong
it's kind of you to notice no one's dying
you had your last laugh almost crying
it's just your half life long to know
and if you need a reason so it goes
if you had completed me
don't think I'd be pleased with you
don't think I'd compete with you
with half of me to take
it's funny how your bee sting touch never leaves me whole
it's not enough to stay here almost trying
you keep your last laugh watch this dying
it's just your half time vertigo
and if you want an answer I don't know
don't think I'd be pleased with you
don't think I'd compete with you
with half of me to take
it's lucky how these phantom limb bee stings never show
it's not enough to leave this falling kindly
you burn my star down twice as brightly
it's just your half light undertow
but if you need forgiveness I don't know
don't think I'd be pleased with you
don't think I'd compete with you
with half of me to take
just a corner of my bed where you don't belong
it's kind of you to notice no one's dying
you had your last laugh almost crying
it's just your half life long to know
and if you need a reason so it goes
don't think I'd be pleased with you
don't think I'd compete with you
with half of me to take

Chris: "Halflife is about past relationships, your sexual history, talking about how losing someone is like having a limb chopped off, then having a phantom limb and getting an insect sting on that phantom limb."
this is one of my faves on the pimps
First off I'll say that this definitely one of my favourite SP songs.
My interpretation of the song is that he knew that his relationship was toxic, leaving him pained shown by the use of [your bee sting touch]. Despite this, he still chooses to carry on with it until his partner finally leaves him. Although he acknowledges that he wasn't happy in the relationship and secretly knew that it wouldn't have worked out [if you had completed me/don't think I'd be pleased with you...], he's still haunted by the memories that they both shared [phantom limb bee stings] despite his partner being toxic towards him during the relationship [you burn my star down].
Overall, I think the song perfectly explains what it's like being in a relationship that you know deep down is bad for you, however you still continue with it because the positive experiences and memories can convince you that your partner is capable of changing their toxic ways. Eventually, the partner leaves and whilst you are relieved that it's over, the memories still haunt you.
Just my thoughts!!

@Gigi09 @gigi09 your take makes a lot of sense, especially about holding on to the good memories even when you know it's not right. i think a lot of us have been there, just hoping things will change even when deep down we know they won't...

it means a lot to me, i love this song is great, the band is one of the best i know, Trip Hop RULEZ!!
genius
My interpretation is that he is talking to someone who has hurt him- and wants him back.
The first line is talking about how half of him was always taken by the lover - "its just your half time vertigo and if you want an answer i dont know" I am not sure if this is still looking into the past- how things were dizzy (Vertigo=dizzy and unsteady) Or if the lover is unsteady and unstable in asking for him back.
"Half life nothing I'd call home" basically having only half of yourself- no one feels hole or safe at this point of devistation. "burned my star down twice as brightly" It basically goes on describing how he was feeling twice the passion being left alone - more feeling in the hate than the love. "it's just your half light undertow but if you need forgiveness I don't know" I believe that this is saying that the lover has realized that she has done wrong and wants forgivness.
"half light breaks with nothing wrong just a corner of my bed where you dont belong" Basically the lover is now realizing they hurt him too much to have him back. "its kind of you to notice no ones dying You had your last laugh almost crying" The lover realizes that its over and he does not need her. she has the last word - but is sad and crying.
"it's just your half life long to know and if you need a reason so it goes"
Basically answering the question "why not me? Be with me" because lover now feels lost and only half there.
"if you had completed me don't think I'd be pleased with you don't think I'd compete with you with half of me to take "
Basically he is saying that she did not complete him anyways - if she did he would be really mad and wouldnt have competed to get her back if he really wanted her- I believe it is because he has grown and is now hole. They changed spots in mourning and he is explaining what is happening to her and why he wont come back
just my idea anwyays
Love this. One of my favorites.
This song is beautiful. Love the mid eastern beat and influence in the instruments. I think it has a few meanings, maybe half life refers to a half life lived before the person(s) he is speaking about, the half life now without them, which is like half of a half life, yet being with them never felt whole. That's one interpretation. The phantom limb bee sting- is feeling the sting over and over though that person is absent and gone. Like corner says about feeling like a limb has been chopped off- it's like the phantom bee coming to sting the phantom limb. Our conceptions inside our heads are the other halves to the conceptual reality in the physical world. Our ghosts, memories, it's in a way half of the real thing. There is so much here and there are usually more than two or three meanings to a song and sometimes the artist doesn't realize it until later. Real art/inspiration creates its-self in a way.
