Hovering Sombrero Lyrics
Hey, Hovering Sombero
Gently waving in the air above the meadow
Softly floating in the sky outside the window
Hovering Sombrero don't be shy
Don't
Dont be shy
Don't be terrified
When you take yourself for granted
Feel rejected and unwanted
Know you're never just a hat
You're never only just a hat you know
Hovering Sombrero
Hovering Sombrero
Time is flying like an arrow
And the clock hands go so fast they make the wind blow
And it makes makes the pages of the calendar go
Flying out the window one by one
'Till a hundred years are on the front lawn
And the old familiar things are mostly all gone
But the old Sombrero just keeps hovering on
Hovering Sombrero hover on
Don't be burdened by regrets
Or make your failures an obsession
Or become embittered or possesed
By ruined hopes remember
When you take yourself for granted
Feel rejected and unwanted
Know you're never just a hat
You're never only just a hat you know
Hovering Sombrero
Hovering Sombrero
Gently waving in the air above the meadow
Softly floating in the sky outside the window
Hovering Sombrero don't be shy
Don't
Dont be shy
Don't be terrified
Feel rejected and unwanted
Know you're never just a hat
You're never only just a hat you know
Hovering Sombrero
Hovering Sombrero
And the clock hands go so fast they make the wind blow
And it makes makes the pages of the calendar go
Flying out the window one by one
'Till a hundred years are on the front lawn
And the old familiar things are mostly all gone
But the old Sombrero just keeps hovering on
Hovering Sombrero hover on
Don't be burdened by regrets
Or make your failures an obsession
Or become embittered or possesed
By ruined hopes remember
Feel rejected and unwanted
Know you're never just a hat
You're never only just a hat you know

I think this was written so they wouldn't have to wait out a boring hangover.... there's several messages within this song that can clearly... I'm tired... I'm gonna go sleep :D:D:D
Well, my knee-jerk thought is that this about UFOs -- at least one photographed hoax was created by using a sombrero-like object.
Then, I think maybe they're simply calling the Sombrero a hat, because the human mind can't cope with it as a real alien-craft. And that they're saying that the aliens have been with us for many years --- waiting for us to evolve to a point where they can deal with us on their level. So, they're telling the aliens to just be patient, until we're able to communicate with them on their intellectual level.
I think tmbg are trying to force all of our clothes off with these gentle lyrics. Myself they are already off.
Once again, TMBG has done it again by giving us deep messages in the guise of arbitrary objects.
The deep themes are self esteem written in the lyrics:
"When you take yourself for granted feel rejected and unwanted, know youre never just a hat, youre never only just a hat you know."
There is also another theme of growing old and feeling nostalgia about years gone written in the following lyrics:
'Time is flying like an arrow And the clock hands go so fast they make the wind blow And it makes makes the pages of the calendar go Flying out the window one by one 'Till a hundred years are on the front lawn And the old familiar things are mostly all gone"
But then we hear that the old sombrero just keeps hovering on; we identify with the object and all sing,
"Hovering sombrero hover on!"
I heard this song and the bit about
Time is flying like an arrow and the clock hands move so fast they make the wind blow and it makes the pages of the calendar go flying out the window one by one
Till a hundred years are on the front lawn and the old familiar things are mostly all gone but the old sombrero just keeps hovering on hovering sombrero hover on
I could never understand why, but in four years, that has never left my memory. Fun fact: 50% of amercans believe in UFO's, aliens, intelligent life on other planets; therefore statistically one of the Jhons believes. This could very well be about UFOs &c.
Remember guys, you're never just a hat.
Well, i think the most important line is "you're never just a hat". i think it's the old Gestalt theory that the whole is more than a sum of its parts. you are not a collection of functions or activities, you are a complete person and taking one or more things away from you does not make you less of yourself.
when all the things you thought you knew are gone, you will just be left with yourself. if you turn out to be wrong, just take it in your stride, it's not the end of you.
I've always assumed this song was about putting your life in perspective. When I was young and got upset I was told "is this going to matter in 5 years?" and the answer was almost always "no," and I'd stop worrying about it...eventually. The titular sombrero in the song seems to me to be the Sun. The lines:
Time is flying like an arrow and the clock hands move so fast they make the wind blow and it makes the pages of the calendar go flying out the window one by one
Till a hundred years are on the front lawn and the old familiar things are mostly all gone but the old sombrero just keeps hovering on hovering sombrero hover on
jive with the thought of "things come and go, but the Sun is always there." The Sun may only do one thing, but it does it well and it does it all the time, and it will do it longer than we'll ever be here. "Don't be burdened by regrets Or make your failures an obsession Or become embittered or possessed By ruined hopes..." because one failing, or even many doesn't stop you from being important during your lifetime.
The sun looks like a giant hovering sombrero, but it is much more. You may fail or be upset by a missed opportunity, but you're still much more.
