The India Song Lyrics
I'd like to go to India
Live in a big white house in the forest
Drink gin and tonic and play a grand piano
Read a few books
Far from what saddens my heart
Try to live away from it
Find a new girl
Who says she feels the same
Get to know her after the trip
Bathe in a forest pool
Her life a part of mine
And let no one know until I'm gone
Live in a big white house in the forest
Drink gin and tonic and play a grand piano
Read a few books
Far from what saddens my heart
Try to live away from it
Who says she feels the same
Get to know her after the trip
Bathe in a forest pool
Her life a part of mine
And let no one know until I'm gone

I always thought this was the most beautiful song on the double album comp. It's an escapist song, Chilton's clearly not the happiest guy. Everyone feels like this sometimes, if anyone's ever heard Mica, by Mission of Burma, it's very similar. Well, Conley wanted to turn into a rock, rather than live in Inida, but it's still a matter of wishing for a way to ignore your problems, whether trhough travel, or transforming into a mineral deposit.
This song makes you warm and fuzzy. It's nice that Big Star have a happy go-lucky tune without an ounce of depression for once. Uplifting and cheerful.
Its always songs like these, the ones written and sung by the other members stuck between the Chilton songs, that help one get through the entire album and diversity and balance to Alex Chilton's mostly dark depressing songs. Very beautiful
This is one of the more dated songs on #1 Record yet it is a good one. It is the most different song of the lot. I also love Chris Bell's "My Life Is Right"
