Caged Bird Lyrics

Right now I feel like a bird
Caged without a key
Everyone comes to stare at me
With so much joy and revelry
They don't know how I feel inside
Through my smile, I cry
They don't know what they're doin’ to me
Keeping me from flyin’
That's why I say that
I know why the caged bird sings
Only joy comes from song
She's so rare and beautiful to others
Why not just set her free?
So she can
Fly, fly, fly
Spreadin’ her wings and her song
Let her
Fly, fly, fly
For the whole world to see
She's like caged bird
Fly, fly
Oooh, just let her fly
Just let her fly
Just let her fly
Spread the wings
Spread the beauty

I think this song is about someone who is going through rough times, but keeps it inside, and they feel like no one understands them. They just wanna get away from everything ("Why not just set her free? So she can fly...") I love this song. There's been a couple times that I could really relate to this song, and just listening to it would help me cope with what I was going through.

sigh this song rox. I just want to cry when i hear it. Even though she seems to mostly be singing about her in her life of fame. I feel so connected to this song in so many ways. This is by far my favorite song on her CD (songs in A minor). I love singing this song. when i'm sad i could listen to this song for hours (although I could listen to it anytime)--I think this song in general is about someone, who feels so trapped, and confused. And there's is one thing that brings them joy ("only joy comes from song"). They fake being happy b/c they don't know what else to do,("through my smile, I cry")...maybe she's incredible to others, but she doesn't see it. And they don't understand that they have problems that they can't let out...The world is keeping her from what she wants, ("keepin' me from flyin").--I love this song.

This song is so beautiful. My favorite line is "They don't know how I feel inside, through my smile, I cry, they don't know what they're doin’ to me, keeping me from flyin’".

I think it's about feeling trapped and having people think you're happy and beautiful, but really you just want to be free.

one of her best songs in A minor was her best album

“Caged Bird” is a song written by American song writer, musician and actress, Alicia Auguello Cook, better known as Alicia Keys off her debut CD “Songs in A Minor”.

The song describes and compares an individual to, “a bird caged without a key”. The individual is crying out for help, but no one knows and understands how she feels on the inside. She pretends to be happy amongst the people around her, but in fact she is hurting from tremendous amounts of pain and suffering

The individual knows she has the potential to do well, but does not see herself true yet, because of the limits of her confinement. She feels the need to blossom and evolve, but is being held back from the world, showing her true beauty and talent.

“Only joy comes from song” (quoted from the song itself), relates to the individual’s desperate situation, in the sense that she feels trapped and lost within her confinement. She has begun to see herself as having nothing to lose by doing what she loves to do, by bringing about the only joy and happiness to her heart. The caged bird sings because; only joy comes from song and that song is the only joyful feeling the individual is left with, in light of her situation.

The individual’s hopes ride in search of freedom, and is left with no choice but to accept her fate. The artist creates a strong impression of utmost desperation and it strikes to me, as a heart rendering cry for someone’s help;, who is willing enough to care and to understand the individual’s crisis at hand.

to me this song is about a person who canoot be herself because the world sees her as different and they all try to make her into what they want her to be. whether its more pretty, more organized, more perfectionistic, and the list goes on on. Its really relatable to me because i have ADD which the world see as somewhat abnormal and different.
