Hall of Mirrors Lyrics

The young man stepped into the hall of mirrors
Where he discovered a reflection of himself
Even the greatest stars discover themselves in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars discover themselves in the looking glass

Sometimes he saw his real face
And sometimes a stranger at his place
Even the greatest stars find their face in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars find their face in the looking glass

He fell in love with the image of himself
and suddenly the picture was distorted
Even the greatest stars dislike themselves in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars dislike themselves in the looking glass

He made up the person he wanted to be
And changed into a new personality
Even the greatest stars change themselves in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars change themselves in the looking glass

The artist is living in the mirror
With the echoes of himself
Even the greatest stars live their lives in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars live their lives in the looking glass

Even the greatest stars fix their face in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars fix their face in the looking glass

Even the greatest stars live their lives in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars live their lives in the looking glass

The song is about self-image, fame, and narcissism and general self-loathing; the idea of becoming disgusted or being mortified or being obsessed with your image when you look at yourself as a reflection or photograph or video of yourself. The band references that this sort of isolation is common, both with normal folks and the famous types and how such "stare into the abyss and the abyss stares back" vanity/obsession can result in a change in a person, though at the cost of losing one's identity and become lost in a world where you are constantly changing what you are and moreso, being detached from real life as you become more and more obsessed with vanity and your reflection and how others see you and how that affects how one sees themselves in the mirror.

I love what the music does at the point where he says "and suddenly the picture was distorted".

People are so pessimistic! The only segment of the lyrics in wich the author makes a negative judgment is the word "dislike". And I woudn't have such a shallow interpretation of what 'mirror" and "reflection" are - arguing that's about image. This was writen in 1977, by a german; it's not a 2019 pop song. The delay and reverb effects evoke an introspective atmosphere and, in addition to that, the minor tonality (E minor) too. Also the cadence/pulse of the song corroborates this thought. The greatest star: someone notable by its power, influence, talent; A young man: someone that's not experienced in life and have doubts; The mirror: the process of thinking about himself; The reflection: the "content" of what he discovered about himself; And, finally, the Hall of mirrors: all of the opinions and critics of others, what other people think about him OR the vast range of personalities he discovered about himself, what he can/could/will be, his inclinations, pursued or abandoned in the entire process of what made him a greatest star. (precarious grammar = not my first language, sorry)

Even though I feel that people may take the connotation of self loathing and vanity as bad and negative, I think that Kraftwerk is actually hoping to affirm that every man is living in the mirror and that it is actually a modality of being. "even the greatest stars" kind of sums this point and i think alludes to the fact that everybody holds within them a vanity which is essential for life however, it can become obsessive and pathological in the case of the artist who lives in a hall of mirrors constantly. But nonetheless, "even the greatest stars live their lives in the looking glass" is a testament to this insight that we live our lives choosing things to exist in them (products, people, etc) based off of their relation to ourselves (personal preference), in other words, our lives are grounded in preferential choices that are determined by self-conscious assessments in relation to the object of choice.

This song is regarding the control of the illuminati on the artists and media. The artists would sell their soul to the Devil in exchange of fame, and part of the deal is that they should appear in the media as the Devil would want them to be to promote Satan worship and New World Order, just like what is happening now to artists, most notably Miley Cyrus.
