Just Recently Lost Something of Importance Lyrics

Look who's talking to their shadow
Like one who hasn't got a friend
Like somebody with a broken heart
That is never going to mend

Look who's walking through the night
In the rain like one who's under a spell
Like somebody with a lot on their mind
But no one to tell

Everyone you see seems so happy and carefree
They've found someone to love, but you are alone

Look who's flipping through the photographs
Of those happier days
Only losing something beautiful
Could make a person feel this way

Everyone you see seems so happy and carefree
They've found someone to love, but you are alone

Look who's talking to their shadow
Like one who hasn't got a friend
Like somebody with a broken heart
That is never going to mend

perfectly describes that blank aimlessness you feel when you're completely alone in dealing with something that is totally weighing you down.

also perfectly describes those private moments where you try to deal with the things bothering you, on your own -- which almost always winds up being sessions of dwelling on the past and looking at old photos & mementos, wondering what the fuck you did wrong.

and finally, it ends where it begins. which, if you read into that, describes the feeling of loss in a nutshell; an unending circle of emotional double-takes, i guess you'd call it.

an emotional double-take: waking up and wanting to tell your best friend something...so you pick up the phone, press the first digit of his/her phone number, and then as you wake up fully, reality slaps you in the face as you remember that you can't call, because that person isn't in your life anymore.
Edited by delial on May 28 2008, at 01:57AM

The lyrics are so sad, yet the music is oddly jaunty, and the ending? Doesn't fit, but nice and fun anyway.

totally agree with delial. The first of Montreal song I've heard and easily my favorite. When I came upon this song I had just lost two best friends of mine, and I can tell you this song completely describes how you feel when you loose something important to you. Either it be a friend, a pet, family, or a lover, that is how you feel pretty much. Everyone seems to have it so easy and it seems so unfair. You spend time just thinking it over again and again. You feel so alone, and you wonder why no one is there to help you or tell you everything is going to be ok. However, as the end of the song shows, things do get better. You turn the key in your door and you step out to face the sun, then you think 'you know, things aren't that bad'.

I personally think the ending is really sad. Like, this guy pours out his heart about how he feels, but in the end the world just goes on being happy without him.

the saddest thing ever... everyone know this...

It sounds like someone who is depressed, nothing more. It's TEMPORARY blue, not a lasting state of mind. Spring is one the way; girls in short shorts and bikini tops will be flooding the clubs and beaches; more great music will be released; and life will once again be on the upswing!
