Alternative 4 Lyrics
It's killing you, you're killing me,
I'm clinging on to my sanity,
All I need is a short term remedy,
Come and hide me from this terrible reality...
Dreaded memories flood back to me,
But there's still a wilful mind behind these cold,
psychotic eyes,
Now I tread this path so differently,
I've opened my mind and darkened my entire life.
I'll dance with the angels to celebrate the holocaust,
And far beyond my far gone pride,
Is knowing that we'll soon be gone,
Knowing that I'll soon be gone...
I'm clinging on to my sanity,
All I need is a short term remedy,
Come and hide me from this terrible reality...
But there's still a wilful mind behind these cold,
psychotic eyes,
Now I tread this path so differently,
I've opened my mind and darkened my entire life.
And far beyond my far gone pride,
Is knowing that we'll soon be gone,
Knowing that I'll soon be gone...

why nobody has commented on those intriguing actually? is it that obvious? or anathema lovers just dont like to comment but rather keep it to themselves? anyways i am clinging on to my sanity
well, this lyrics are very criptic to me. not obvious in any way... I think this is about a planned suicide -because of the name and the line "And far beyond my far gone pride, Is knowing that we'll soon be gone, Knowing that I'll soon be gone..."
i think this song is about sex...mainly because of the lyric "I've opened my mind and darkened my entire life." i think it's about a couple deciding to take a different approach during sex.they decide to let other ppl in..hence Alternative 4.... in the end it doesn't quite turn out ok though...which is why his life has darkened. what do you think??could this be what they mean?

sorry urd, i didn't mean to reply to your particular comment, i'm still getting used to the site
as usual, anathema's lyrics are very cryptic and beautiful at the same time to me, this song is about someone going insane it really fits with "there's still a willful mind behind these cold psychotic eyes"; there's a very traumatic experience in the person's life: "dreaded memories flood back to me / come and hide me from this terrible reality", and the result is that they go insane after all, what normal person would dance with angels to celebrate the holocaust? i also think the music itself suggests insanity but, that's just what the song means to me and i'm prefectly aware that it can mean different things to differnt people; great art rarely has a unique interpretation
I completely agree, and the music certainly hints towards insanity. One thing I wonder though, listening to this again after many, many years, is that perhaps the last part, with the calm sounding riffs ("I'll dance with angles..") is just the person being in an insane asylum, where they are being medicated and the medication gives some respite to all the negative thoughts, but at the same time the screaming indicates that the negative thoughts are still there, except muddled to a certain extent. And at the very end, the usual riffs come back indicating that the respite is only temporary...

And at the very end, the usual riffs come back indicating that the respite is only temporary and cannot actually make the person forget, and in some sense, the medication only makes the experience worse because it gives a false sense of normalcy, but when the medication wears off, it makes everything 100 times worse, hence the screaming... This is the beauty of great lyrics, they can mean so much by saying so little. This may be just me though. Either way, the song is amazing.
This is not a normal person's lyrics. Far from shocking though. I mean thats wt i expect from anathema. It's about basic criminal instincts. I love it!
He is fighting with his addiction, heroin in this case. A friend of mine, luckily he has escaped from that hell, cried when he listened this song for the first time.

Looking at these lyrics, and knowing Anathema, I most definitely think this is NOT about sex..
