Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes Lyrics
I took off for a weekend last month
Just to try and recall the whole year
All of the faces, and all of the places
Wonderin' where they all disappeared
I didn't ponder the question too long
I was hungry and went out for a bite
Ran into a chum with a bottle of rum
And we wound up drinkin' all night
It's those changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes
Nothing remains quite the same
With all of our running, and all of our cunning
If we couldn't laugh we would all go insane
Reading departure signs in some big airport
Reminds me of the places I've been
Visions of good times that brought so much pleasure
Makes me want to go back again
If it suddenly ended tomorrow
I could somehow adjust to the fall
Good times, and riches, and son-of-a-bitches
I've seen more than I can recall
These changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes
Nothing remains quite the same
Through all of the islands and all of the highlands
If we couldn't laugh we would all go insane
I think about Paris when I'm high on red wine
I wish I could jump on a plane
So many nights I just dream of the ocean
God, I wish I was sailing again
Oh yesterday's over my shoulder
So I can't look back for too long
there's just too much to see waiting in front of me
And I know that I just can't go wrong
With these changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes
Nothing remains quite the same
With all of my running, and all of my cunning
If I couldn't laugh I just would go insane
If we couldn't laugh we just would go insane
If we weren't all crazy we would go insane
Just to try and recall the whole year
All of the faces, and all of the places
Wonderin' where they all disappeared
I was hungry and went out for a bite
Ran into a chum with a bottle of rum
And we wound up drinkin' all night
Nothing remains quite the same
With all of our running, and all of our cunning
If we couldn't laugh we would all go insane

good times and riches / and son of a bitches / i've seen more than i can recall...what line is better than that? This song is full of great lines. It's a great, "reflection on life" type of song that we can all relate to
i interpret the song as all the places one can go and how they differ from one another
My favorite Buffett song, I've always taken this one as pretty straightforward, Jimmy talking about his feelings towards the tropics and how people there treat each other differently than in the day-to-day of cooler lattitudes...the greatest line's gotta be "If we couldn't laugh we would all go insane," my personal motto =op
Such a sweet song. Awesome lyrics. All true as well. When you head further south, the more things are laid back. My favorite line in music: "Oh yesterday's over my shoulder So I can't look back for too long there's just too much to see waiting in front of me And I know that I just can't go wrong."
Just awesome.
FINS UP!
ran into a chum with a bottle of rum, and we wound up drinkin all night.........how can you not love this song? It's just all about seizing the carp and enjoying life.
According to CBS News, this song is the favorite song of Senator Bob Graham (D-Florida), who is a little odd. The lyrics are interesting: "Ran into a chum with a bottle of rum / And we wound up drinkin' all night." Graham ran for president but dropped out in 2003.
Like most Jimmy Buffet songs this is about escaping reality. When life gets tough Parrotheads get going to the islands or just migrate to the nearest tiki bar if they don't have the vacation time. This song with its painfully inane and sadistically sophmoric lyrics is about Jimmy Buffet's inabilty to cope with life's obstacles which would require looking within himself and facing his fears. Rather than grow and learn to adapt to ones environment, Buffet suggests it is better to change the environment. For those of us who don't have our own jet and millions of dollars of spending cash, the bottle of rum will have to do.

Wow, I think you really missed Jim’s messages and wisdom in this song. They include… 1) Remember the good times 2) Be grateful “if it suddenly ended…” 3) Look excitedly to the future “waiting in front of me…” 4) Enjoy the present “a chum with a bottle of rum” 5) Don’t take life or yourself too seriously and remember to smile, laugh and enjoy life “if we couldn’t laugh…”

Some of his songs are about chilling and escaping, but many are packed with insight and wisdom if you look a tad deeper.

Margaritaville is OK. It is a good song. But when I first heard "Changes in Latitude", I felt as if it were part of me. To travel, really GO somewhere, sailing or flying at that time was only an unapproachable dream. Now, I hardly walk thru an airport without getting "...departure signs in some big airports..." jetting thru my mind. After 60 or 70 Atlantic crossings, this Texan likes Margaritas fine and all, but those changes in latitudes and attitudes really can keep you sane.
