Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
Rows of houses all bearing down on me
I can feel their blue hands touching me
All these things into position
All these things we'll one day swallow whole
And fade out again and fade out
This machine will, will not communicate
These thoughts and the strain I am under
Be a world child, form a circle
Before we all go under
And fade out again
And fade out again
Cracked eggs, dead birds
Scream as they fight for life
I can feel death, can see its beady eyes
All these things into position
All these things we'll one day swallow whole
And fade out again
And fade out again
Immerse your soul in love
Immerse your soul in love
I can feel their blue hands touching me
All these things into position
All these things we'll one day swallow whole
And fade out again and fade out
This machine will, will not communicate
These thoughts and the strain I am under
Be a world child, form a circle
Before we all go under
And fade out again
And fade out again
Cracked eggs, dead birds
Scream as they fight for life
I can feel death, can see its beady eyes
All these things into position
All these things we'll one day swallow whole
And fade out again
And fade out again
Immerse your soul in love
Immerse your soul in love

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield

I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example:
"'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
Ok, I'm aware of what Thom said about this song so this is just a personal interpretation of it.
This song reminds me a lot of the short story "The Pedestrian" by Ray Bradbury. Here's a link to where you can read it (it's only like 5 pages). mikejmoran.typepad.com/files/pedestrian-by-bradbury-1.pdf
Anyway, so to me this is about someone feeling isolated from the current society. He basically sees everything as being meaningless. Our houses, our machines, our lives. They will all come to an end. Ultimately everything is pointless, everything will eventually be swallowed whole and we will just fade out, along with all our petty possessions. It's about despair. And I know Thom states that this song has no light at the end of the tunnel, but the last two lives seem very optimistic to me and hopeful. Love is all we have and it's the ONLY thing that allows our lives to seem meaningful and purposeful. Love is the only thing that is worthwhile.
love helps propogate the species and make us feel secure in a group and put smiles on our faces and good feel chemicals in our bodies. Love is a valid something. You are right. Although I don't believe in th soul, just the collection of energy and matter that composes each individual and the active and inactive store in their brains. I can't immerse my 'soul' in love. I can immerse my mind and body in social and financial exchange in a loving way. Love's not a constant or permanent or free from logical bounds. Dating and some of the courting 'love' states may be irrational but not illogical.
Everything is meaningless. People choose to create meaning with each other or self. Even the pursuit of discovery I would say creates meaning only when exchanged. Knowledge is amoral like money and thought etc... actions and consequence form moral networks among people. The more people exchange the easier it would be for people to discovery universal moral absolutes as they exchange. I disregard anyone who says life is meaningful or has meaning. People choose to create it, but it is socially affirmed through exchange and feedback. Humans can generate their own personal feedback mechanism for (creative) thinking and idea/art formation. I propose that all thought is creative as it must be by definition. The lucidity of the self we all have to a lesser or greater degree. It's often greatly increased by group or community. I think this is what you sort of mean by love ... but exchange is always a double edged sword. Isolation can be more appealing than exchange when it is unnecessary.
Our philosophies are similar, but we also disagree on some points. Knowledge can be seen as a moral/immoral action, especially if the knowledge you seek is contrary to public, social, or religious opinion. Your questioning will be met with negative attitudes and feelings. Also, I think it's a big assumption that there are moral absolutes, although I believe there are. However, I believe that these absolutes would be very small in quantity and still be based on the particular individual's feeling. Like one absolute would be "the killing of someone innocent is wrong." I think just about everyone would agree with that, but it still depends on each person's idea of who is innocent. If someone can justify their actions, no matter how delusional they may be, they will believe they are not doing anything immoral. Also, you say that some aspects of love may be irrational but not illogical, but isn't it illogical to act irrationally? Also, I think exchange can cause feelings and beliefs in the opposite of meaning. Exchange is also what leads people towards pessimism and even things like suicide. In order for "meaning" to be constant it must be anchored to something constant as well, and not something as superfluous as other peoples opinions. Meaning should be tied to something you identify with in yourself. Whatever you perceive your "essence" as being. Meaning exists in however you define yourself. Your own standards, your own morals, your own thoughts; not in the reaction other people have to these. Also, your statement about all thought being creative depends on what you consider to be thought. I don't think that it's creative to think about what 2 + 2 equals, or how to spell a word, or to think about "tree" when I look outside and see one. Thought is creative when it comes from something internal and isn't just an automatic reaction to external stimuli. I also would add that love of self is extremely important in finding/deriving meaning, possibly more important than love of others.
Your comment is very precise & coherent & fits well with the lyrics. This world is full of pain & miseries but LOVE definitely makes it a better place for living. Yes, I agree, that the love of self is important to develop love for others becoz we understand others' feelings & emotions better through understanding our emotions & feelings. The person who loves himself will not likely to hurt others.
