This song certainly IS by Sarah McLachlan...on the 'Solace' album. It's lovely, and quite melodramatic, though I think that works in its favour. Less metaphorical than some of her other songs, the lyrics are poetic and straightforward--they remind me a bit of an old ballad or a Loreena McKennit style story-song. Probably because it's got several lines that set it in a particular time and place, so I get a clear visual image here.

HarryThePotter, this is definatly by her. Its off her album which I'm listening to now. Its a beautiful song and is very emotion. Its about someone leaving her, that she loves very much. She doesn't want to let them go, and is hoping they will come back.

I think this one is about a woman who married a sailor or an explorer. He went back to sea--the one who possesses his soul, who he loves more than her. So when she finds he's gone, she runs down to the ocean and finds his ship has sailed.
