Basically, this song sums up the entire "Gentlemen" album. It's all about a guy who is still a "guy" in that he cheats and gets hurt and hurts the ones who love him. And he's not telling her out of regret, he's telling her to hurt her. He has no conscience, he just wants the pain and wants to give her some. This sums up their painfully passionate relationship.
And to the last person who posted, BUY THE ALBUM! It is my all-time favorite album. The sad thing is you can find it at any used CD store for like $5. How do more people not love this album? Is no one passionate anymore? Maybe the album is too raw for most people. Too bad.
I feel like it's Greg aware of an invisible force or evil devouring his relationship and it's feeding on mistrust. It sounds like someone has told her about his actions and he's had to tell the truth. He's saying anything to keep her and becomes aware that within the truth the liar is present. He's not a bad guy just chained to his own shameful urges. Also he expresses his inner child that's not ready to go it alone. Really he wants his girlfriend to also be his mum. As if she could be that unconditional.
How could no one post about this song, it is my fave Afghan Whigs song, next to 66. I have no clue what its about but its kick s MAJOR ASS

I love this song. But I can't find an Mp3 of it anywhere. Does anyone know where I can get one or does anyone have one. This was a great song and I want one of my friends to hear it.
I'm with you, army, i couldn't add much to your opinion of the song. Fucking classic. "It's locked it's jaws, and now it's swallowing. it's in our hearts, it's in our heads..." One of the best lines, classic.
I totally agree with Army & myenemy. "Gentlemen" is one of the greatest records of all times. This CD helped me get through some tough times in my life. However, I view this song on a more related note. He has some sort of substance abuse trying to numb the personal demons he deals with on a regular basis “Once again the monster speaks; etc”. I think he is also admitting to some mental instability as well. He knows he’s “not the man his actions would suggest”. In the process, he is verbally, if not physically abusive to his partner in the process “This time the angers better than the kiss”. He is tired of saying he is sorry and is making excuses for those actions to ease his conscience “This ain’t about regret…my conscience can’t be found. This time I won’t repent…Somebody’s going down” (a way of justification). In addition, he has probably written these thoughts while in that mental state. Just a thought.

This guy is a bad guy, totally attractive to chicks, because that's just the way the world works. But he's destructive. He's warning you, so get with him at your own risk.

For those who don't have this CD, you must get it. It is sheer brillance.
there is a new book out about the whole album on amazon from 33 1/3 - great book about the history of the band and the songs on the album, most is about greg's relationship with his girlfriend before this album, he was cheating on her, then found out she was doing the same while he was gone.
