Guess I'm stuck in a dream
Surrounded by coloured leaves on the ground
As I stare at the trees
I see one fall down on my hand
As I start to explore
I can't ignore a man
He turned his head around
His face was all worn by the sun
I'm going out for a while
So I can get high with my friends
I will
I'm going out for a while
Don't wait up cause I won't be home
Today
Drifting down a road
Losing myself in a dream
Feel my hands getting cold
Sat in aboat on a lake
I'm going out for a while
So I can get high with my friends
I will
I'm going out for a while
Don't wait up cause I won't be home
Today
Climbing up trying my best
As I sink
Climbing up trying my best as I sink again
Lying back on the floor
Reaching up high into space
See myself in a glass
I'm counting the lines on my face
Again
Counting the lines on my face
Again
I'm going out for a while
So I can get high with my friends
I will
I'm going out for a while
Don't wait up cause I won't be home
Today
I'm going out for a while
So I can get high with my friends
I will
I'm going out for a while
Don't wait up cause I won't be home
Today
Today, today, today...
Help me to be the same
Surrounded by coloured leaves on the ground
As I stare at the trees
I see one fall down on my hand
As I start to explore
I can't ignore a man
He turned his head around
His face was all worn by the sun
So I can get high with my friends
I will
I'm going out for a while
Don't wait up cause I won't be home
Today
Losing myself in a dream
Feel my hands getting cold
Sat in aboat on a lake
I'm going out for a while
So I can get high with my friends
I will
I'm going out for a while
Don't wait up cause I won't be home
Today
As I sink
Climbing up trying my best as I sink again
Lying back on the floor
Reaching up high into space
See myself in a glass
I'm counting the lines on my face
Again
Counting the lines on my face
Again
So I can get high with my friends
I will
I'm going out for a while
Don't wait up cause I won't be home
Today
So I can get high with my friends
I will
I'm going out for a while
Don't wait up cause I won't be home
Today

from Feeder's Myspace page:
That was the turning point for the band, a big song for us. Its a really youthful song. I had a John Lennon thing going on in my head when I wrote it. The first time I played it to my girlfriend, she started crying. I was like, Its not that bad! Theres a kind of frailty in the song. I was never into that macho rock thing. For me, that was the other side of what we were and what I am as a writer. High was played at Jons funeral. His parents chose it because it was one of his favourite songs. It was a nice moment.
I signed up just to comment on this song, haha. This is not even my type of music really, but this song is moving.
I tend to think that it's about aging and growing apart from your friends. The "Counting the lines on my face" part makes me think that. I think people take their friends for granted until we all get into our mid-twenties and people start families or move away and we grow apart.
I think this song is about knowing that, and just being happy that you have those rare opportunities to see these people that are most important to you in your life.
This song reminds me of being young - it has a real sense of nostalgia about it, there feels like a longing to be young and careless - or may be that it just me. I was 15 when I heard it first - now I'm 30. You have to grow up eventually I guess.
