The Last In Line Lyrics

We're a ship without a storm
The cold without the warm
Light inside the darkness that it needs, yeah

We're a laugh without a tear
The hope without the fear
We are coming - home

We're off to the witch
We may never never never come home
But the magic that we'll feel
Is worth a lifetime

We're all born upon the cross
The throw before the toss
You can release yourself
But the only way is down

We don't come alone
We are fire we are stone
We're the hand that writes
Then quickly moves away

Chorus:
We'll know for the first time
If we're evil or divine
We're the last in line
We're the last in line

Two eyes from the east
It's the angel or the beast
And the answer lies between
The good and bad

We search for the truth
We could die upon the tooth
But the thrill of just the chase
Is worth the pain

Repeat chorus

We're off to the witch
We may never never never come home
But the magic that we'll feel
Is worth a lifetime

We're all born upon the cross
The throw before the toss
You can release yourself
But the only way you go is down

Repeat chorus

I'm gonna agree with trapezoid on some of this.

The intro into the song is about the unborn child and innocence. An unborn child is a pure thing; not yet tainted by the corruption of the world. The child is born, or "coming home."

"We're a ship without a storm The cold without the warm Light inside the darkness that it needs, yeah

We're a laugh without a tear The hope without the fear We are coming - home"

We're off to the witch. I agree with trapezoid, the witch means the world or the state of. Dio is saying the world is a sketchy place and you might not make it out alive but the journey is completely worth the time and effort. Rock on!

We're off to the witch We may never never never come home But the magic that we'll feel Is worth a lifetime

The next verse is a religious reference IMO. "We're all born upon the cross" could (and I think) is a religious reference. Jesus, God, and Christ are everywhere and constantly being shoved down our throats. You can release yourself, but the only place to go is Hell, so says the "Christians."

We're all born upon the cross The throw before the toss You can release yourself But the only way is down

The rest of the song starting with "We don't come alone" reinforces the fact that we aren't by ourselves. There are others out there that think and act such as we do.

We don't come alone We are fire we are stone We're the hand that writes Then quickly moves away

We'll know for the first time If we're evil or divine We're the last in line We're the last in line

Two eyes from the east It's the angel or the beast And the answer lies between The good and bad

We're the Last in Line; The Last to Die. The last to find out the truth for ourselves. What happens after death.

Actally this is what i think. The fall of the elevator means the fall of man from heaven. The underground world it is the world we are living in it with all the games and stuff. And we all try to come home(heaven). And Dio is the savior(Christ i believe). The elevator is like a stairway to heaven:)).

Yeah soundoff has it good i would just say that we are all born with good and bad inside of us. It"S the road that we take that makes the difference. We have the choice of being a killer or not to be.

Just because a person look good on the other side does not mean is it a good person at all. A person could be badly seen and inside be the best person in the world. You just don'T know.

All right, you guys are all full of garbage. If you've seen the music video you know it's all about a kid that crosses Dio and as such ends up in Dio world. Mother fucker learns his lesson and then Dio lets him go with a warning to the world: Dio is king.

your a moroon.

your a moroon.

your a moroon.

For me it's about how humanity is the last in the production line of god "we're the last in line - See how we shine!" but it's uncertain wath path we will take "we'll know for the first time, if we're evil or divine" and at the end of day it doesn't matter which path you choose it's the chance to choose your journey "we may never never never come home, but the magic that we'll feel it's worth a life time" what matters because at the end saints and sinners end in the same place 6 ft under "you can release yourself but the only way is down".

So for me this song is about free will and embracing the great potencial we as humans as the last in (the divine assembly) line have.

The video really illuminates the lyrics. To me this song is talking about the search for truth and our journey of illumination and the challenges we face on this journey...the worldly traps we can fall into and never escape from if we're not careful (in the video the mind controlled zombies...the ultimate trap). Dio saves the kid and he escapes (ie if you listen to the words they can save you).

@natcheraly the devil has told ronnie that this is the generation of armageddon it will occur soon enough those standing on earth will find out where they are headed

Dio is classic 80’s metal, and watching him live was a great show! But don’t always read too much into the lyrics. Ron was a excellent wordsmith! However, not all of his songs came from some deep esoteric or philosophical location. He had an excellent way of taking the dichotomy of good and evil and making it work in a song.
