Weird, but this will always remind me of high school. We got beat in the state soccer playoffs, and on the way home, we just listened to this song and cried. It still makes me sad when I hear it, not so much because we lost the game, but because it reminds me of a great time that I can never go back to.
This song was written by Rob Thomas about two of his friends.
rob thomas said him self that he wrote this song for a girl he like and all his friends liked.. but she was dating an asshole... the song means if we can't date then we can just hang (hang out).. DUH!!!!

Negative. LISTEN to the words. "she leaves the pictures hanging on the wall". This is two people that live together and have photos of themselves on the wall. Why would she have pictures on the wall if they are just dating or hanging out? Makes no sense. This is obviously about knowing that there is a problem in the relationship but neither wants to admit what it is or be the one to end the relationship, so they just accept it every time the problem comes up and end up getting over it and keep hanging around each...

This song does fuckin rock. I think it is about a guy and a girl who are in love, but the guy puts the chic through hell, sometimes without even realizing what he does (funny how he couldn't see it all till she grabbed up her coat). I think that both people know they need to either change or get out of the relationship but instead they just "hang" and wait for the problems to be forgotten until it all just builds up and it is clear that one must leave. I had a relationship like this and this song still makes me cry, it was like I was never appreciated until I had one foot out the door. The entire relationship we both threatened constantlly to leave, but he never thought I actually would...and I still miss him.

Rob Thomas said at a live show this song was about 2 of his friends who liked each other but didnt know and then eventually the girl moved away and the 2 of them never got together.

This song is absolutely amazing. I first heard this song when one of the greatest periods of my life was coming to an end and I knew there was nothing I could do to prevent it. It makes me cry nearly every time I hear it. It just makes me not want to take anything for granted anymore..
My boyfriend and I are in the process of breaking up. Matchbox Twenty could be the sound track for our whole relationship. The other day he came home and told me that this was his new favorite song by the group. I looked it up tonight, because the name of the song didn't ring any bells when he told me. Now that I have read the lyrics..I just want to cry more than I have in the last few weeks. I know that there is still hope for us and I don't want us to be this song. All the times that we have had problems, he was always the one to leave and I was devastated. But this time I had convinced myself that, me leaving was the right thing to do, even though it rips my heart out everyday. I have never loved a man more in my life, and he will always have my heart. I don't want this to happen to us. I wish we could just go back a couple of weeks when things were still amazing. I hate to think that four years of our lives are about to be nothing but memories that neither one of us can even think about without tearing ourselves apart. I don't want to leave...I don't want us to end...I know that you love me....you are just blinded by bigger things and if you wait too long, we can't go back.
