New Horizons Lyrics

I've had dreams enough for one
And I've got love enough for three.
I have my hopes to comfort me,
I've got my new horizons out to sea
But I'm never gonna lose your precious gift,
It will always be that way,
And I know I'm gonna find my own peace of mind
Some day, some way.

Where is this place that we have found?
Nobody knows where we are bound.
I long to hear, I need to see
'Cos I've shed tears too many for me.

But I'm never gonna lose your precious gift,
It will always be that way,
And I know I'm gonna find my own peace of mind
Some day, some way.

On the wind, soaring free,
Spread your wings, I'm beginning to see.
Out of mind, far from view,
Beyond the reach of the nightmare come true.

I've had dreams enough for one
And I've got love enough for three.
I have my hopes to comfort me,
I've got my new horizons out to sea

But I'm never gonna lose your precious gift,
It will always be that way,
And I know I'm gonna find my own peace of mind
Some day, some way.

This song is about birth of Justin Hayward's daughter (?) (I've got love enough for three) AND the passing of Justin Hayward's father (I'm never gonna lose your precious gift) in the same year.

A very, very touching song.

p.s. check out the DTS 5.1 version of this one.

there's an absolute stunning video of the song on You Tube, see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iF2__-K8qFo my favorite is @ 5:07 :) does anyone know if this was played much in their concerts?

The stanza where he sings, "out of mind, far from view, beyond the reach of a nightmare come true" blows me away, the song goes along like many other love songs/ballads, then he speaks of his existence without her love as being a nightmare come true! That is some serious heartache! I would like to know what you think about this verse, why is he so distraught?

This is one of my favorites by the Moody Blues.

The only thing I would add is that "love enough for three" implies his wife, his newborn daughter, and possibly his mother, who was widowed. I'm not sure if he has siblings, so that's why I say the third person is his mother. I can't imagine that he was including himself in the mix!

I have been listening to the moodies for over 50 years. I have always had my own interpretation of the songs that they wrote and they had their own. I have applied my own because once its written without a direct expression of the point or specific subject it becomes abstract and open for us to do as we will. Lyrics are eternal. I think that's the way they wanted it. Their Seventh Sojourn Album will be played at my ascension to the spirit when I leave this flesh behind

Part of the genius of good lyric writing is that it can be about more than one thing.

Seventh Sojourn was the last album before the band's hiatus, and this song can also apply to his feelings about moving on from The Moody Blues.

"I got my new horizons out to sea But I'm never gonna lose your precious gift It will always be that way"

I read that as a goodbye letter to the band. He'll be doing new things, but the creativity and camaraderie they shared will continue to nurture him.

"Where is this place that we have found? Nobody knows where we are bound I long to hear, I need to see 'cause I've shed tears too many for me"

He's asking how did it come to breaking up the band he once loved, and although the future will be more uncertain without it, he embraces it, partially because he wants to hear and explore different sounds and because the tensions in the band and pressures of running a record label have driven him to tears.

"On the wind soaring free Spread your wings, I'm beginning to see Out of mind far from view Beyond the reach of a nightmare come true"

He's already getting distance from the internal tensions of the band and label, which have reached nightmarish proportions.

I love the song, but listening to it makes my heart hurt, because it makes me think of the breakups of my own bands.

My Interpretation

@Euthymia At the time of writing 'New Horizons' Justin had no idea the band was going to break up as it was still 3 years and a world tour away from happening. They were actually in the recording studio attempting a follow up to Seventh Sojourn when Mike, John and Ray called for a meeting with Justin to discuss a hiatus. Justin was shocked and said he didn't see it coming at the time. They had actually recorded a new album and then decided to wipe it as they decided it wasn't up to scratch. The only trak known to...

@SAJK Thanks for the added real life context. That's why I qualified what I wrote by saying "can also apply." The lyrics refer wistfully to good things coming to an end and looking forward to new good things. It just so happened that the band would go on hiatus a few years later, not release a new album for 6 years and never tour with Mike again. I can't help but connect the song with that when I listen to it.

Even more then , " Whites of Night Satin", perhaps due to way overplay, but even as a kid, this song is hauningly beautiful!!!!! Perfect song. Along with Billy Joel's ,"State of Grace", Gordon Lighfoot's " Beautiful", and Frank Sinatra's ," A Rainy Day", the Best Romantic/ Beautiful Songs to me!

My Opinion

The EXACT WORDS FROM Justin Hayward himself about this particular song: “ There's a song called "New Horizons," which was at a really tough time in my life. I'd not long lost my father. There was quite a lot of death around me, and I was having to cope with that and work out how you handle that and what you do and how you can get through it. It's very poignant to me.” That’s EXACTLY what Justin specifically stated about this song.

@Joe E Yes, correct. That is one of Justin's quotes on this song. (He made a similar statement about 'You Can Never Go Home' which is much more explicitly about his father and brother). However, 'New Horizons' is not just about his father, but also his new family, hence the 'I have love enough for 3' line and the 'New Horizons' from the title in the face of the 'Nightmare come true' (his father's death). I also derive this from statements he has made over the past few years and not my own interpretation.

@Joe E Here it is 2023 and I just read that quote from his interview. I love this sing. I just started playing this in my guitar today and can't stop. Here I am at 63, having played now for 50 years and loving this song for just as long, but just learning it today
