Mink Car Lyrics
It's knocking off
My diamond wig
Knocking me down
Into the platinum ground
Woke up in a beautiful dream
Alone
Alone
I got hit by a Mink Car
Hit by a Mink Car
Driven by a Guitar
And the silver Chauffeur says
That it's all in your head
When you're 24 carat dead
Dead
In my dream
She is reaching past my hollow form
And her smile's
An open sign in an abandoned store
I got hit by a Mink Car
Hit by a Mink Car
Driven by a Guitar
And the silver Chauffeur says
That it's all in your head
When you're 24 carat dead
Dead
Dead
My diamond wig
Knocking me down
Into the platinum ground
Woke up in a beautiful dream
Alone
Alone
Hit by a Mink Car
Driven by a Guitar
And the silver Chauffeur says
That it's all in your head
When you're 24 carat dead
Dead
She is reaching past my hollow form
And her smile's
An open sign in an abandoned store
Hit by a Mink Car
Driven by a Guitar
And the silver Chauffeur says
That it's all in your head
When you're 24 carat dead
Dead

This song is an obvious spoof of the Burt Bacharach's musical style... and they nailed it, right down to the flugel-horn solo. The very idea of a car covered in mink fur fits very nicely into the excesses of the era.
Of course, it wouldn't be TMBG without the song really being a depressing song about death and abandonment hidden by a sugary-sweet melody. :)
"And her smile's an open sign on an abandoned store" is one of my favorite lyrics ever. What a beautiful and yet painful metaphor.
ndo and Lombardi are on the right track I think. It's about the fear that too much success can kill an artists integrity. The "Mink Car" is money, success and fame. It's "driven by a guitar" because the singer's music career is what has brought all that success to him. But he's afraid that all of that success has killed his artistic integrity. He's afraid that his music has become a "hollow form".
I don't get this song...I like it, but I don't understand... I understand that all the adjectives are expensive items, normally bought for women (ie Mink, Silver, Diamond), but why is a guitar driving the car?
The "car" is a guitar case that hits the speaker in the head (and kills him?)
The music in this song is better than the lyrics, IMO. But that doesnt mean the lyrics suck, it only means the music is well orchestrated.
Do you really wanna know what i think? I think the hidden message within this song definitely has something to do with governement/some other sort of monarchy... All the expensive stuff in the song, of course, could only be afforded by such a godly figure, and when the singer dies, that's symbolic of how much these gods hate us... I gotta stop buyin this stuff from Johnny. Oogh....
It's about being rich and successful...and dead inside.
I agree with ndo. I think being "hit by a mink car" is sort of a metaphor for selling out.... The song is all about being rich and successful and how much it sucks.
I like the phrase "24-carat dead." Also "open sign on an abandoned store."
