Let It Rain Lyrics

The rain is falling through the mist of sorrow that surrounded me.
The sun could never thaw away the the bliss that lays around me.

Let it rain, let it rain,
Let your love rain down on me.
Let it rain, let it rain,
Let it rain, rain, rain.

Her life was like a desert flower burning in the sun.
Until I found the way to love, it's harder said than done.

Chorus

Now I know the secret; there is nothing that I lack.
If I give my love to you, you'll surely give it back.

Chorus

Rain = Love

A great tune with a bright, happy guitar riff. I literally spent hours listening to it on my bedroom stereo over 30 years ago. This song originally appeared on the album "Eric Clapton" in 1970. The other big hit on this album was "After Midnight". On this solo venture, Clapton had surrounded himself with a large group of talented friends including the lovely Rita Coolidge. Clapton was rediscovering his Christian roots at this time, and I have no doubt that this song is about Jesus Christ. Whoever typed in the lyrics above may not have them quite right... I'd always thought it went "MY life was like a desert flower burning in the sun, until I found the way to love was harder said than done!". How do I know that Christ is the subject of the song? Well, it was soon after this album when Clapton formed "Blind Faith" with Steve Winwood, Ginger Baker and Rick Grech. A Clapton track on that album was entitled "Presence of the Lord" and the lyric goes "I have finally found a way to live in the presence of the Lord". Great artists always discover the truth sooner or later!

I don't think this song is about Jesus--it's about God, and how Clapton "gave his love" to God, and God gave him back the love. Now he knows the secret--Clapton giving his love to God, and he (God) will "surely give it back".

My brother insists that Clapton doesn't play the guitar solo on this song. I forget who he said played it. Does anyone know if he's right and the guitar solo wasn't done by Clapton?

@SteelyDan Leads were done by Clapton. Stephen Stills plays guitar in a section on "Let it Rain." The song was influenced by Stills' "Questions."

One of my favorite Clapton tunes. One interesting observation, something which has always stood out, the line, 'harder said than done'. I wonder if he intentionally said this backwards (to throw people off of truly knowing the real meaning of the lyrics), or if he did so because it just sounded better or fit better with the music this way.

Harder said than done doesn't really make any sense. What he's really trying to say is, 'Easier said than done'. That is the phrase that we all know and use (in our American English vernacular). If it really was harder said than done, then it would also obviously be easier done than said.

Clapton bludgeoning the pathetic fallacy for 5 minutes and 2 seconds. He needs to buy an umbrella and get over it...
