This is a very relateable song, to me, tonight...
about wanting, needing, to change, but not knowing if you can... about wanting someone else to wait but knowing you yourself could never do it... and the risk of the relationship becoming a waiting game, for the other to change... and risking the chance of losing them, in the end.

actually, I believe the meaning of this song to be very up-front and obvious. he fell in love with a girl, they went out, they broke up, and "Something went wrong ", and since then he's felt empty. he hasn't loved at all cince the tradgedy. he holds on to the small "grain of sand" of the memory of the feeling, but wishees it would be a "pearl", bigger, better, stronger.
i think this song is about him falling in love with a girl they break up he meats another girl but he is still hung up on his ex that he feels like he cant move on.
