I think this song is about unrequited love. She feels this burning, passionate love for this guy, but he tries to avoid falling for her.
There's also a sexual double meaning in some of the lyrics, "I hold the lock and you hold the key", which becomes more apparent when you watch the Blond Ambition performance.
I don't think one can actually make anyone love anyone...as in "I'll make you love me". Sounds threatening lol.

this song is about trying to change someone. I have defiantly felt this way about someone and tried to change them. It never turns out the way that you like because unless they want to change it's only a show.
I have a very strong memories whenever I hear this song...reminds me of watching my Aunties 'Immaculate Collection' Video when I was really young, over and and over again, and just being in awe. This video stands out to me for some unknown reason more than the others. Always loved the song.

What is interesting in that in the music video, I got the sense that it was more about censorship, or about backlash from the media about Madonna's sexual image.

it's interesting how she says open YOUR heart to me, YOU hold the LOCK and I hold the KEY, because if she wants HIM to open his heart, then HE'S the lock, and SHE'S the key. so she sings it the other way. maybe she does this because she just wants to stay consistent with the sexual double meaning, since if it were the other way, it wouldn't make much sense. plus it rhymes better ;)
I really think that the boy in the video represents Madonna or some kind of wannabe, he's not there to see her body, he's there to watch the show and imitate her. Someone here said something about censorship and media and i agree completely. The old man who doesn't let the boy in gets desperate when she leaves, and i think he's the media, who would have nothing without the one he tries to repress.
