I ran from my house that cannot contain me
From the man that I cannot keep
From my mother who haunts me, even though she's gone
From my daughter that never sleeps
I ran from the noise and the silence
From the traffic on the streets
I ran to the treetops, I ran to the sky
Out to the lake, into the rain that matted my hair
And soaked my shoes and skin
Hid my tears, hid my fears
I ran to the forest, I ran to the trees
I ran and I ran, I was looking for me
I ran past the churches and the crooked old mailbox
Past the apple orchards and the lady that never talks
Up into the hills, I ran to the cemetery
And held my breath, and thought about your death
I ran to the lake, up into the hills
I ran and I ran, I'm looking there still
And I saw the crumbling tombstones
All forgotten names
I tasted the rain, I tasted my tears
I cursed the angels, I tasted my fears
And the ground gave way beneath my feet
And the earth took me in her arms
Leaves covered my face
Ants marched across my back
Black sky opened up, blinding me
I ran to the forest, I ran to the trees
I ran and I ran, I was looking for me
I ran to the lakes and up to the hill
I ran and I ran, I'm looking there still
And I smelled her burning flesh
Her rotting bones
Her decay
I ran and I ran
I'm still running away
From the man that I cannot keep
From my mother who haunts me, even though she's gone
From my daughter that never sleeps
I ran from the noise and the silence
From the traffic on the streets
Out to the lake, into the rain that matted my hair
And soaked my shoes and skin
Hid my tears, hid my fears
I ran and I ran, I was looking for me
Past the apple orchards and the lady that never talks
Up into the hills, I ran to the cemetery
And held my breath, and thought about your death

I ran and I ran, I was looking for me
I ran to the lakes and up to the hill
I ran and I ran, I'm looking there still
Her rotting bones
Her decay
I'm still running away

Beautiful. It's about her dealing with stuff in her life, her mother's death, breaking up with lovers, the birth of her daugher.
She seems so delicate and vunerable in this song...it's stunning.
one of my favorite madonna songs. she's spilling everything out. she's letting you in. it's a very personal song. it's a very personal album actually.
I think this song sounds like it's about her mother dying. She's trying to stop thinking about her but in the end she can't help being consumed by her death.
absolutely amazing song.

My sentiments exactly.
This song to me is about a woman who was very stressed out about things in her life, so she ran away, left her place and is now discovering life, different experiences, and learning about herself, FINDING herself. She says she was "looking for me". She found alot of different things and experienced alot, including that a part of her died. She had some meaningful and possibly religious experiences. She is still running, meaning she is still out there experiencing life, looking for herself, looking for peace... peace of mind, happiness, clarity, etc. She is still running away from her past. Beautiful song, one of my favorites of Madonna for sure.
@FoFi I agree, there’s more to this song than just it seems it’s quite religious to me

The perfect end to the perfection that is RAY OF LIGHT.
This is Madonna's second (after PROMISE TO TRY) most powerful song.
There is so much going on in this song lyrically that it's difficult to really pin down all of the emotions it captures and pulls out of me. It's that powerful.
Yes-Mer Girl is a sad ballad about her mother's death-and all the other connections swirling around Madonna. Mer Girl is one of the best songs the lady has ever written and sung-even cried. Yes-Mer Girl is that good and that sad because in this song, Madonna is crying but I think that is what makes her brilliant! Her sadness and brilliance are absolute truth! Happy birthday Madonna!
I can't believe no one has said anything about this song. It's so beautiful and calming yet so alive. I love it.
