WE MET WHEN WE WERE IN SCHOOL
NEVER TOOK NO SHIT FROM NO ONE, WE WEREN'T FOOLS
THE TEACHER SAYS WE'RE DUMB
WE'RE ONLY HAVING FUN
WE PISS ON EVERYONE
IN THE CLASSROOM
WHEN WE GOT THROWN OUT I LEFT WITHOUT MUCH FUSS
AN' WEEKENDS WE'D GO DANCING
DOWN STREATHAM ON THE BUS
YOU ALWAYS MADE ME LAUGH
GOT ME IN BAD FIGHTS
PLAY ME POOL ALL NIGHT
SMOKIN' MENTHOL
I PRACTISED DAILY IN MY ROOM
YOU WERE DOWN THE CROWN PLANNING YOUR NEXT MOVE
GO ON A NICKING SPREE
HIT THE WRONG GUY
EACH OF YOU GET THREE
YEARS IN BRIXTON
I DID MY VERY BEST TO WRITE
HOW WAS BUTLINS?
WERE THE SCREWS TOO TIGHT?
WHEN YOU LOT GET OUT
WERE GONNA HIT THE TOWN
WE'LL BURN IT FUCKIN' DOWN
TO A CINDER
COS YEARS HAVE PASSED AND THINGS HAVE CHANGED
AND I MOVE ANYWAY I WANNA GO
I'LL NEVER FORGET THE FEELING I GOT
WHEN I HEARD THAT YOU'D GOT HOME
AN' I'LL NEVER FORGET THE SMILE ON MY FACE
'COS I KNEW WHERE YOU WOULD BE
AN' IF YOU'RE IN THE CROWN TONIGHT
HAVE A DRINK ON ME
BUT GO EASY...STEP LIGHTLY...STAY FREE
NEVER TOOK NO SHIT FROM NO ONE, WE WEREN'T FOOLS
THE TEACHER SAYS WE'RE DUMB

This song is about growing up and watching your friends go their own ways in this case his firends went to jail. but they're coming backand when they do he'll be there the way he always was to buy them a drink and have their back.
Yeah this one of my favourite Clash songs. The whole Give Em Enough Rope album is in my oppinion very under rated. Didn't get it at first but makes perfect sense now.
this song is about a love story/friendship story. in the song, jones and his friend share high school and other experiances, until his friend ends up in prison for a small crime.
the end of the song kind of says that the 2 grew apart and lost touch, but that they'll always remember what happened. it ends with mick's encouraging words to his friend, "go easy, step lightly, be free"
one of the clash's more personal songs. great tune.
one of my faves
What about Robin Banks now? Anyone knows?
I this song. I indeed feel nostalgic. It's sad. But somehow this sadness makes me feeling lucky. No, not happy. Lucky.
This song is about Mick Jones' personal experience in Brixton with his friend, pretty self-explanitory if you read the lyrics. You can hear the emotion in his voice when he sings it, this song truly comes straight from the heart.
I always associated this song with Springsteen's "Bobby Jean".
Whooooaaa. Now that you mention it....

Me too! They're very similar and pretty much have the same meaning, only I don't think Bobby Jean ever ended up in jail...

This song is about Mick's friendship with Robin Banks, who he went to school with, they would do anything to alleviate boredom- fighting with bullies, answering back to teachers, and were kicked out.Mick concentrated on learning guitar properly(I practiced daily in my room) and RObin got caught up with a group of guys who robbed betting shops.RObin was sent to prison, thats pretty much the backround to the song
The greatest heterosexual manlove song ever.
i love this song... it sounds sad but like, happy kind of sad. i dont know, it makes me feel nostalgic for some reason. it's amazing. the clash are so awesome
