This song is based on the novel by John Halderman (I think, probably misspelled) called the Forever War. It is story of war and love set against the background of a thousand year struggle based loosely on the Vietnam war where the forces of mankind grapple with the extreme relativistic effects of near-light-speed travel, while battling an unknowable enemy.
The opening verse, I'm pretty sure, is taken word by word from the book, in a letter to the main character from his love interest, who has found a way to be reunited with her lover despite the gulf of years between them.
