You and I Lyrics

You and I
Ah, the calm below that poisoned the river wild
You and I
Tears that dry on a rude awakened child
Where you look down
I've walked before
Burning holes
With eyes of liquid brown
If we had only known
In a way
We wouldn't reach this ground
You were my only home
Silver eyes
I want to see you shine
And we will feel the weight
Fall away from us in time
Searching our past for the true
You and I, you and I, you and I
All for you
Where you think you'll fall
I adore you
Where you shut your soul
I will open for you
If we had only known
In a way
We'd never reach this ground
I'll know
Silver eyes
I can see us shine
I said, we will feel the weight
Fall away from us in time
Searching our past for a true
You and I, you and I, you and I
All for you

Just to add, during "we will feel the weight fall away from us in time, it really does sound like he's crying or tearing up.

It's really hard for me to listen to this song. There's something about the way he's pushing out his notes, it just makes me so sad. Like you really feel his pain.

i only recently heard this song despite having this album for about a year now. i think its very beautiful and caguht my attention from the first note. this may be me but there is a hint in the melody in the very beginning that makes it sound like hes about to go into 'i put a spell on you' its got this painful, desperate sound that is so intense and to me it feels as though maybe he is letting go of someone he loves finally accpeting he has lost her 'and we will feel the weight fall away from us in time'

"silver eyes" makes me think of his ex-gf Rebecca Moore - she has very light gray/blue eyes. He also mentions her "silver eyes" in an older song from 1992 called In The Cantina "fill my head like her silver eyes". There's another small connection between this song and Nightmares by the Sea. In both songs (but only during the live versions) he repeats a line:

You and I - found you in the morning capsized

Nightmares - I found her in the morning capsized.

i'd probably put this in my top 3 favourite jeff songs. maybe i'm just seeing something that isn't there, but to me this song's about a guy who has been in love with a girl for a long time and she hasn't been ready to commit to him. i think it's like he's trying to tell her that everything will be ok. again, maybe that's just me. i love it anyway. jeff's voice is at it's best here

This song is AMAZING.

I think it's basically about two people in love. It kind of sounds like people have given them a hard time, or they have other issues to think about before they can fully commit to a relationship

"and we will feel the weight. fall away from us in time. searching our past for the true."

Maybe I'm wrong, but that line implies some kind of baggage, or something holding them back. But when they finally get over it, or get rid of it, they can fully be in the relationship.

"ah, the calm below that poisoned river wild, you and i. "

That line kind of makes it sound like the poisoned river wild is the world around them, and their love is trying to exist within it.

ok...has no one else realised the connection with this song and jeff buckleys death? look 'the calm below that poisoned river wild' 'we will feel the weight fall away from us in time.' ..its kind of creepy. i mean its probably just coincedense but a part of me is wondering if he was warning everyone of what was going to happen?

There is someone smart here :) Are you a songwriter or musician? You picked up on that communication very well. Don't doubt your intuition, it's right on! :)

I suppose. Still beautifully haunting and touching nevertheless

amazing. beautiful. I've been going through a really tough time, a break-up of sorts. I turned on my iPod to try and occupy my head from the depression and overload of thoughts. I put it on shuffle and this song came on. I was entranced. It was so perfect. I've had the album on my ipod for a while but hadn't listened to it yet.

I agree. It seems to imply a kind of serene aftermath of a rough and confusing time for a couple in which they both feel so uncertain and he is trying to comfort her. Beautiful and inspiring.

Oh, shut up and tell it to Inorp. Sick Sick Sick. You crossed the lines once again using your position and intelligence and age and influence. Sick Sick Sick. Buyt you're his/her problem. And I'm going on a date to a movie today and I'm not going to waste another MOMENT today thinking about a very boring person who has chosen the easiest way to live 'cause he's a coward. You have no balls and died long ago.

So what. One of us is "chubby." What is the other one??? Go for it, Dad, if you're even alive in that shell that barely resembles a man.

Leave her alone. She's naive. You're sick. Besides, how long will it last, Mr. Honesty??? Might as well quit now 'cause it's only a matter of time she sees through the charming mask. Go have a drink, why don't you. It will be your only friend in another few years anyway.
