Raspberry Lyrics

Held in hands, a warm cup
Of skin always taken in by peers
And friends and the heightened fears
Over the years
Now I know I'm not like everyone

In this head I see the ground
You came from, unknown, undug
From where you were staying in
A backyard bed until
We came together

Raspberry, in my hand
You feel alright but I don't
Know if I am
I can't change
What I am right now, but
I'll be fine in the next life

I know I can say, I'm honest
With myself and with
My red tasty gem
And sure they will try, but
They can't take away
My secret loving friend

And on a good day, my mind
Is like the country...green wide open
A breath of zen that's nice
On the eyes, lonely, without a prayer

Take the trip that I have
I am at risk
But I guess you know...

Explosions
From the goldfish bowl
Visions
Of blue girls crying stars
The more the garden sings
The harder it gets to stay in
There are a lot of choices
So many voices ruling me
So many of them at once
Yelling, "Everything's a mess"...I know

it is a very deep metaphor, I think it's about being gay and the fear that goes along with it of not being accepted...think about it. Raspberry = fruit , fruit = gay. (No offence to homosexuals)

"always taken in by peers And friends and the heightened fears Over the years Now I know I'm not like everyone" (he's scared cause he's realizing he's gay)

"I can't change What I am" (many gay people would like to change but they feel as though they can't)

"There are a lot of choices (men...women???) So many voices ruling me (society) So many of them at once Yelling, "Everything's a mess"...I know" (he feels helpless)

this last part is about how society dictates that being str8 is better than being gay...so many voices being society

I may be wrong...let me know what you think.

I think Edwin may be bisexual, in the song "Basketball" on the Dig album he admits to masturbating to a girl across the street in his room, and at the end there are the lyrics "Sold my sex in public places to junked-out fags with yellow eyes"

This was on a site, so take it with a grain of salt. It could be completely accurate and true, or it could be total horseshit.

Edwin was born in 1965. I should know- I went out with him for 10 yrs. -the I Mother Earth years. He quit the band because it wasn't what he got into music for in the 1st place & wanted to be happy making music. He left- Jag & Chris didn't kick him out. He actually beat IME for best video w/ his 1st solo effort with the son. "Hang Ten"-...

At a show in Toronto back in 98 Jag said the song was about a man who gives up on trying to find conventional love in society and instead decides to fall in love with a piece of fruit.

Just that simple.

I thought the same thing, especially after seeing the bathroom scene in the video (the guy sneaks a look at the guy at the urinal next to him and get's beat up).

Seems like it's the point of view of someone with schizophrenia or a personality disorder or something like that. I get the feeling of a lobotomy somewhere in this too.

It seems like it would be about someone whos gay but Christian Tanna the writer admitted that its just a bout a guy who's sexually attracted to fruit, and thats his problem he just cant help that he is born that way.

By the way Edwin is gay

Its a good song no matter what it means. Never knew Edwin was gay, news to me. They should all do themselves a favor and hook up for a new album.

Oh, one more thought. He sounds a lot like Billy Corgan on this song. So much so that I could see the Pumpkins playing it.

IMHO it's about acknowledging you're different from everyone else and at the beginning the singer's afraid of being accepted, but by the end they don't care what others think anymore.
