Scarlet Lyrics

Nothing can eclipse
Tender fingertips
Youthful girlish hips
Crimson pouting lips

But what d'you say when nothing's meant
What d'you do when all is spent

Faithless faceless night
Drenched in empty light
Scarlet starlet's bright
Vanity's delight

Cream of life you'll find in her
First to come she's first to serve

Turned away you're out of luck
Spurned again
No one to fall in love

Cover art for Scarlet lyrics by Lush

It's really, really hard to penetrate some of Lush's early songs.

Okay.

I think this is about a very shallow woman, addressed to the man pursuing her. The first verse is a description of her. When she talks/flirts with him "nothing's meant", and when he leaves "all is spent". The second verse is a detail of her shallow-ness and vanity, then the chorus 1.5 shows that she'll "serve" anyone who's "first to come". And the bridge is his feeling after she rejects him.

Another masterpiece!! Lush is by far the most underrated and misunderstood bands in the last 25 years.
