Sweetness And Light Lyrics

See my life (I've been so tired)
See my self (I've been uptight)
See my life (I've been so tired)
See my sight (I could disappear)

See with you memories fading fast
And with you it's never going to last

You are the sweetness in my eyes
You are an apple in disguise

See with you
I never seemed to look the other way

Only to stay, only to breathe
Only to see
That space and light is what I really need

I never wanted to tell lies
You are the sweetness in my eyes

You are the juice I need for life
You are the sweetness in my eyes

Most Lush songs have autobiographical elements. This one is no different.

Mike and Emma were "misfits in an environment of privilege" (according to The Guardian) until they met when they were 14. Or in their own words, from a few years before they formed Lush: "Each were isolated in their own septic tank until that glorious day when their paths crossed and they realised that their destinies were to go hand-in-hand."

This is what Emma writes about in Sweetness And Light. Miki is the apple in disguise; the weird girl with the spiky red hair who turned out to be a good friend.

Song Meaning

@nothingnatural what if Emma wrote it knowing would appeal to chris’ affections for Miki, I wonder if anyone thinks that this song may be a factor in why he end his life. I believe it is that powerful, esp that close to home for him, and would have died rather than the band breaking up...or what Emma wanted hm to think perhaps...? Is that completely crazy??
